My dog is sick and in pain after Motrin. Should I see a vet?

It can cause severe kidney damage or even ulcers in the stomach or intestines. Ulcers can be indicated by black tarry or coffee grounds like stool. I suspect you were right that he is painful based on your description of his behavior. Small breed dogs can be prone to back pain. The muscles that line the spine can spasm making the dog very sore. There not over-the-counter pain medications that I can recommend for him. I would keep him very quiet and carry him as much as possible. Encourage him to eat and drink as much as possible. Motrin can be very toxic to the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract in dogs, but the toxicity is dose dependent. At 25 mg/kg we can see stomach and intestinal ulcers and even perforations. At >100 mg/kg the medication can cause severe kidney failure. 25 mg/kg for Susie would be 477 mg, and that would mean she would need to lick over 2 tsp of the Motrin off the floor to ingest a toxic dose. It may be that something else is causing her vomiting and decrease in appetite, and I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian. If you think Susie may have ingested over 2 tsp I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian ASAP. If she is otherwise healthy it may be okay to wait until you are off work.

Contact the ASPCA animal poison control center at (888) 426-4435 and they will help you determine the potential severity of Max's ingestion based upon the maximum amount of ibuprofen he may have ingested for his current body weight. From there, I expect that he will need to go to an ER vet for blood work and likely fluid therapy and monitoring. I agree with your vet to keep an eye on Calcifer and if his symptoms continue or worsen, to bring him in. Keeping him happy, eating, and spending a little time together to cuddle may help your own nerves as well!

NOOOO!! Do not give any Motrin!! I don't know why you want to give this but if you are going to take her to the vet you do not want to mask any signs that the vet may need to make a diagnosis. Also, the vet will want to give you a different kind of anti-inflammatory and that will react with the Motrin. Motrin (ibuprofen) has a VERY narrow safety margin so just the tiniest bit of overdose can be life-threatening. I am not sure which OTC pain and anti-inflammatory medication you used but some of them can be toxic to dogs. Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, and Naproxen can cause liver/kidney problems when used in dogs. Aspirin can be used but it can cause gastric ulcers. She really should be examined by your vet to determine the cause, especially since she has been feeling bad for over a day. Your vet can run labwork, if needed, and prescribe medications to help treat. She may need a gateointestinal protectant or other medications. Hope she feels better soon.
