Is tomato, carrot, chicken soup with bay leaf safe for my dog?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would avoid tomatoe sauce that contains onions and garlic. There is no published “toxic” dose for tomatoes. Every dog is different on how they handle certain fruits and vegetables. I would start small and gradually increase the amount watching for tummy upset manifesting as vomit or diarrhea. I would feed as a treat only. Only feed ripe red tomoatoes. The plant and green tomatoes do contain solanine which is harmful. Everything should be in moderation. Onions and garlic are toxic to animals and I do not recommend any sauce contains those ingredients. Have a great day!

Tomatoes are fine to feed dogs, but the tomatoes have to be ripe. Never feed a green tomato, as they have higher amounts of tomatine, which is harmful to dogs in large amounts. Lettuce is fine as well, but make sure there is no onion on it. Onion is toxic to dogs. 1 bay leaf is unlikely to be an issue, but bay leaves have the could potential to cause some irritation to the stomach and intestine which may result in vomiting and diarrhea. The leaves of a tomato plant contain the glycoalkaloids alpha-tomatine and dehydrotomatine. These substances are toxic to both pets and people. If your cat or dog eats the leaves, he might experience lethargy, drooling, stomach upset, diarrhea, vomiting and changes in his behavior. Tremors or seizures could also occur. If you have observed or suspect your pup has munched on your tomato plants, it's best to get him to the vet so he can be treated. Poisoning is a serious situation and you should visit an emergency vet if your regular vet isn't available.

Roasted garlic is the only ingredient that would be potentially toxic in this list, but I doubt there is anywhere near enough garlic to cause a problem in dog Faith's size. Any new food has the potential to cause stomach upset, but in my experience most labs have stomachs of steel and I bet Faith will be just fine. The soup sounds delicious - it's too bad you didn't get to finish it!

Hello there! Luckily, most fruits vegetables are quite healthy for our pets. Here are some you want to avoid: Avocado Onion Garlic Chives Apple cores and seeds (apple slices are ok) The green parts of a tomato (red parts are ok) Cherries (seeds, leaves, and stems are toxic) Apricots (seeds, leaves, and stems are toxic) Grapes and raisins Wild mushrooms (grocery store mushrooms are ok) Currants Green potatoes (cooked, ripe potatoes are ok) Rhubarb I find that many dogs like baby carrots, green beans, and peeled apple slices. A small amount of pepper in chicken stock is not a cause for concern. Low sodium chicken broths can be used in small amounts, but assure that the stock or broth has the lowest sodium amount possible and does not contain garlic or onions, as both are toxic to dogs.
