How much tomato is safe for my small dog? Can it cause harm?

Pet's info: Dog | Japanese Spitz | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 11 lbs

Around how much tomatoes must around 13 lbs dog eat to cause harm to her health? Cause she often got tomato sauce, but I recently found out too much tomatoes can cause harm.

I would avoid tomatoe sauce that contains onions and garlic. There is no published “toxic” dose for tomatoes. Every dog is different on how they handle certain fruits and vegetables. I would start small and gradually increase the amount watching for tummy upset manifesting as vomit or diarrhea. I would feed as a treat only. Only feed ripe red tomoatoes. The plant and green tomatoes do contain solanine which is harmful. Everything should be in moderation.

Onions and garlic are toxic to animals and I do not recommend any sauce contains those ingredients.

Hi there! If Bella just licked a bit of the tomato sauce, I would not expect this to cause any problems at all. It's true that onions can be toxic to dogs, but they need to eat a significant amount in order to cause toxicity issues - I'm not sure how big Bella is, but even a small 10 pound dog would need to eat around four teaspoons of pure onion to cause problems. So normally, just eating a bit of sauce that contains some onion isn't enough to worry about :)

Hello there! Luckily, most fruits vegetables are quite healthy for our pets. Here are some you want to avoid: Avocado Onion Garlic Chives Apple cores and seeds (apple slices are ok) The green parts of a tomato (red parts are ok) Cherries (seeds, leaves, and stems are toxic) Apricots (seeds, leaves, and stems are toxic) Grapes and raisins Wild mushrooms (grocery store mushrooms are ok) Currants Green potatoes (cooked, ripe potatoes are ok) Rhubarb I find that many dogs like baby carrots, green beans, and peeled apple slices. Help! My dog ate tomato leaves. Are they poisonous? What to do?

The leaves of a tomato plant contain the glycoalkaloids alpha-tomatine and dehydrotomatine. These substances are toxic to both pets and people. If your cat or dog eats the leaves, he might experience lethargy, drooling, stomach upset, diarrhea, vomiting and changes in his behavior. Tremors or seizures could also occur. If you have observed or suspect your pup has munched on your tomato plants, it's best to get him to the vet so he can be treated. Poisoning is a serious situation and you should visit an emergency vet if your regular vet isn't available.

Can eating tomato leaves affect a dog's blood sugar or cause diabetes?

Hi and thank you for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! To my knowledge, eating tomato leaves do not have an impact on blood sugar. Eating tomato leaves, while they may cause GI upset like vomiting or diarrhea, are rarely toxic in dogs and cats. Schnauzers actually are pre-disposed or developing diabetes, so this is not uncommon in these breeds. It may have just been a coincidence. I hope this helps and thank you again for posting!

My dogs ate tomato sauce with ricotta cheese. How long to monitor?

If each dog only ate 1/2 tablespoon, they will likely be fine. If they are sensitive, you may see some diarrhea or vomiting within the next 24 hours. Is tomato, carrot, chicken soup with bay leaf safe for my dog?

No. Bay leaves and tomatoes are toxic to dogs. Do not give pets any human soups because they also often contain onions and garlic which are also toxic. In general, avoid giving pets humans food other than white meat chicken or turkey breast and fresh vegetables such as peas, carrots and green beans. Be careful giving pets frequent human foods (give as treats only) as this may make them finicky eaters. Best of luck.
