What treats or food toppers are safe for my cat with kidney disease?

Hello, thank you for using Pet Coach. Unfortunately there are no food toppers that I am aware of that will be suitable for a cat with kidney disease. Sticking to a strict prescription kidney diet is the BEST treatment for kidney disease and I don't suggest you stray from that. I don't know if you are only feeding Tony the dry formula but most come also as canned food so you could always top off with the canned food. You could even puree it into a gravy if you wish. Help me find high-quality cat food after a bad brand experience.

Wellness, Weruva and Royal Canin are all good choices. When it comes to a canned food, look for one with a named protein source of animal (not plant) origin. Choose a food that comes from the can looking like a hockey puck. Avoid foods with gravies or sauces. These are typically higher in carbs which can predispose a cat to obesity. Avoid meat meals, by-products as well as store or discount brands. These latter two contain low quality ingredients and more fillers.

Best cat food: wet or kibble? What care and probiotics do they need?

Canned food is recommended because it has a high moisture content and it is a high protein/low carb diet. Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they require protein (of animal origin) and very little to no carbs in their diet. In the wild, the only carbs ingested are typically those eaten by small prey. Many dry foods, by their very nature, are high in carbs which can lead to obesity. You can continue to feed a dry food as long as you choose a grain free or low carb product. Keep them up to date on vaccines, use monthly parasite prevention, feed a healthy diet and provide plenty of exercise and love. Probiotics can be used to promote gut health and won't harm them, however if they have no GI issues then you can skip them.

Can Hills Science Diet 11+ be a safe topper for kidney cats?

Because this food isn't prescription, it won't be formulated to be lower in phosphorus and protein. I would speak to Tony's vet to see if they recommend using something as a topper to get him to eat his food.

What's the best smooth, high-protein, grain-free wet food for my chubby young cat?

I feel like Wellness fits all of those categories pretty well. I guess affordable is a very relative term, but if you are only feeding one cat, one of the large cans should last you a bit. This is what I feed to my three adult cats and they all love it. You will definitely need to go to a pet food store, tractor supply, or an online supplier to obtain this food rather than a supermarket usually. Hill's also makes pretty good quality (has a grain free line) food, but I don't think their wet food is smooth like you requested. Anyway, hope this helps!
