Help! My dog ate tomato leaves. Are they poisonous? What to do?

Hi and thank you for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! To my knowledge, eating tomato leaves do not have an impact on blood sugar. Eating tomato leaves, while they may cause GI upset like vomiting or diarrhea, are rarely toxic in dogs and cats. Schnauzers actually are pre-disposed or developing diabetes, so this is not uncommon in these breeds. It may have just been a coincidence. I hope this helps and thank you again for posting!

While some pets may not show any symptoms after ingesting tamale foods, there have been cases of fatal poisonings. Symptoms of tamale poisoning may appear a day or several days after consumption, depending on the amounts ingested. Common initial signs include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and loss of appetite.

One leaf can cause lower level toxicities like vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Multiple leaves can cause fatal heart arrhythmias. To be on the safe side, I would recommend inducing vomiting by a vet even with her history of digestive upset since this toxin will also cause digestive issues. An anti-nausea shot can be given after Goldie vomits to try to prevent any worsening of the vomiting at home. Tomatoes are fine to feed dogs, but the tomatoes have to be ripe. Never feed a green tomato, as they have higher amounts of tomatine, which is harmful to dogs in large amounts. Lettuce is fine as well, but make sure there is no onion on it. Onion is toxic to dogs. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would avoid tomatoe sauce that contains onions and garlic. There is no published “toxic” dose for tomatoes. Every dog is different on how they handle certain fruits and vegetables. I would start small and gradually increase the amount watching for tummy upset manifesting as vomit or diarrhea. I would feed as a treat only. Only feed ripe red tomoatoes. The plant and green tomatoes do contain solanine which is harmful. Everything should be in moderation. Onions and garlic are toxic to animals and I do not recommend any sauce contains those ingredients. Have a great day!

The leaf may burn her mouth, but she'd have to eat a lot of them for it to be lethal. She may experience some gastrointestinal effects, such as diarrhea and vomiting, and if these symptoms persist more than 24 hours get her in to see the vet.

Yes tulip bulbs are indeed to toxic to dogs and cats. Signs of intoxication are vomiting, depression, diarrhea, hypersalivation. So your dog clearly has been poisoned. With large ingestions, more severe symptoms such as an increase in heart rate, changes in respiration, and difficulty breathing may be seen. Should you notice your dog having breathing problems or should he appear very ill you should contact your vet or take him to a Pet ER. Generally it is not life threatening in a healthy dog, however every dog is different and there is no guarantee.
