My dog has red eyes after an overnight vet stay. Is this normal?

You need to take Eva into the vet first thing in the morning. It’s not normal her eyes are red, and any eye problem needs to be checked out immediately. Leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Best of luck.

Red and watery eyes may indicate an issue such as an allergy to something, or even illness such as respiratory issues. You may see additional signs such as fever, lethargy, loss of appetite or even nasal discharge. An increase in drinking water may be related, or may just be an attempt to stay hydrated if your dog is dehydrated from not feeling well (you can check this by gently pinching the loose skin on the back of your dog's neck- if it is quick to go back to normal, your dog is hydrated, if it is slow or sticky in returning back to normal, it is an indication of dehydration). If her symptoms do not resolve within the next day or so, or if she shows additional signs of illness or worsening of already seen symptoms, then scheduling a veterinary checkup is best.

This can sometimes happen during surgery, especially when the blood pressure changes or the eye gets irritated. I would not worry too much about it. If the redness has not disappeared by Thursday or Friday or if it is getting worse, , take your dog back to the vet for a recheck.

It's hard to tell if what you are seeing is normal or not. Some people mistake the appearance of the 3rd eyelid as a problem, when really it is normal. Suede also may have conjunctivitis, or inflammation/infection of the tissue surrounding his eyes. He could have allergies that cause the redness and prominence of his 3rd eyelid, the pink tissue present in the 2nd picture. Without doing an exam and looking at those tissues and in and around his eye, it is impossible to tell. If he starts squinting, that is a sign of pain, so I would definitely take him in asap. I would recommend you take him in to your vet for an exam to see if he needs any topical treatment for his eyes or if what you are seeing is his normal anatomy.

Ouch, poor Sam! You did the right thing by rinsing his eye immediately. The redness and swelling of his eye could be a result of irritation from the shampoo. In some cases of irritation, the cornea can also become scratched, particularly if Sam is scratching his face or rubbing it on the ground. A vet should examine Sam's eyes and will likely need to perform a fluorescein stain test to determine if any scratches are present. If there are no scratches, Sam may need a prescription for a steroid based eye medication to decrease the inflammation in his eye. However, if a scratch is present, steroids in the eye are not safe and a different anti-inflammatory medication may be needed. Make sure Sam is wearing an e-collar (cone) to prevent him from irritating his eye further. I hope that he's on the mend soon!

Hello there! While probably not an emergency (unless Dodi appears to have discharge or discomfort), I do recommend that she is seen by a vet. Broken blood vessels in the sclera (white part) of the eye are not entirely uncommon in pop-eyed dogs like the Havanese (usually from stress or irritation), however it usually happens in one eye at a time. Dodi is a young dog, and I would not expect any serious conditions, however it is always best to contact a vet when it comes to strange eye issues as if there is a problem, they can get worse quickly. The vet will want to check for conjunctivitis and foreign objects, though I would expect that Dodi would be acting uncomfortable if either of these were the case. I recommend calling your veterinarian. When pets do not respond to treatment as expected, that can mean that the real reason for the illness was not discovered. I suspect the veterinarian will need to examined Aura again and check for a foreign object trapped under the eye lid or uveitis. Call the vet today. Best of luck.
