My dog has red, bloodshot eyes and discharge. Should I see a vet?

This usually happens with trauma to the eye or if the dog has been choked. If it is just a burst blood vessel, it should resolve with time, like a bruise. If there is any swelling, squinting, cloudiness of the clear part of the eye or discharge, I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian to make sure there is not something more serious that requires treatment.

I would recommend taking Princess in for a veterinary exam. Eyes tend to heal quickly or get bad quickly. The one picture looks similar to a scleral hematoma, but the other picture looks like something is going on in the cornea. The cornea can be an emergency situation if there is an ulcer present. The veterinarian will do some diagnostics like an eye stain and prescribe appropriate medications for her. Eye injuries are painful, so she might need pain meds. If Scarlet is squinting or if her eye has discharge I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian. The blood vessels in the eye can become larger when dogs are excited or when they have eye infection or inflammation. If just the one blood vessel is affected and she doesn't seem uncomfortable you probably don't need to intervene unless the redness gets worse.

Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Harvey to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is infected or injured it is likely painful, this will prompt Harvey to scratch or rub his eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration. Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly in dogs I would have him examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments.
