My dog's eye is red and swollen from shampoo. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 11 days old | 13 lbs

I washed my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel a few hours ago and shampoo got in his eye. I immediately washed it, but now his eye became extremely red and rolled down. I gave him antibiotics drops, but they don't work....Please, help.

Ouch, poor Sam! You did the right thing by rinsing his eye immediately. The redness and swelling of his eye could be a result of irritation from the shampoo. In some cases of irritation, the cornea can also become scratched, particularly if Sam is scratching his face or rubbing it on the ground. A vet should examine Sam's eyes and will likely need to perform a fluorescein stain test to determine if any scratches are present. If there are no scratches, Sam may need a prescription for a steroid based eye medication to decrease the inflammation in his eye. However, if a scratch is present, steroids in the eye are not safe and a different anti-inflammatory medication may be needed. Make sure Sam is wearing an e-collar (cone) to prevent him from irritating his eye further. I hope that he's on the mend soon!

Oh no, poor Sam! It sounds like the shampoo has really irritated his eye. You did the right thing by washing it out, but given that it has now become extremely red, he has to see a vet. The eye is such an important and delicate structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take Sam into a vet now to have his eye examined and treated. I don't recommend treating his eye yourself with antibiotics drops, especially if they weren't prescribed to him by a vet. A dog's eye reacts differently to human eye medications than a human's eye, and giving him human medications that aren't prescribed by a vet could lead to harm to Sam. A vet will know which medications are safe to give Sam to treat his eye problem, please take him into a vet right away. Good luck, I hope this helps!

However, please monitor the eyes carefully and if he starts rubbing at his eyes, if the eyes start watering or he is holding them closed then please schedule a visit with your veterinarian. Eye irritation can develop into an ulcer on the cornea and these need to be treated quickly and aggressively.

Rinse Sam's eye with cool water as well. Monitor it for redness, swelling, discharge, or pain. He would show pain by keeping his eye closed as much as possible and/or rubbing at his eye. If you see any of those signs, have him seen by a vet. Best of luck.

It's very likely some shampoo got into her eye, try to gently rinse the eye with running water then try to leave it for a few hours to calm down. if within 4-6 hours you do not see any improvement in the eye condition you should then take her to your vet in order to get it checked and treated, she might need eye drops to reduce the irritation.

My dog's eye is red, swollen, and losing hair. What's wrong?

It looks like an infection around the eyelid. This can happen if the eye has been excessively moist lately. The other common cause of this hair loss around the eye is a mite known as Demodex. This is normally seen in puppies. Sport looks like he's a senior, so it's less likely, but still possible. The cause of the swelling can usually be identified by a veterinarian. They can look for the mite and treat for infection. The vet will also be able to give medication that will take down the swelling, which is much needed now. For now, it's best if you can flush the area with saline. You can find this at the local pharmacy or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush for 15 seconds twice a day. This will give some relief and help to treat/prevent infection. I recommend taking Sport to the vet within the next few days to keep this from getting worse.

I would recommend that Sampson get checked out by a vet. The symptoms you have described could be caused by allergies, infection, corneal ulcer or abrasion, among a few others. You can use an OTC saline eye wash to gently flush the eyes to try to remove any dirt or debris that can be causing irritation. Sampson should also wear an e-collar or cone to prevent damage to the cornea from rubbing and itching. But if the eyes don't look better in the morning he should definitely see a vet. Eyes can heal quickly, but they can also get much worse very quickly! I hope Sampson gets to feeling better soon!

My dog's eye is red after bath soap. Will it resolve naturally?

Aww poor guy! It will likely resolve on its own over the next 24 hours. Rinse his eye thoroughly with tap water to make sure residual soap is gone. If it’s not resolved in 24 hours or if it starts to seem like it’s bothering him, take him to your vet. It’s possible there is enough irritation to cause an ulcer on his cornea. (Though not likely.)
