My dog's eye is bloodshot after spay surgery. Is this normal?

If Luna has blue eyes this could be normal Variance. However, if you have not seen these spots before and if the become bigger or increase in number you should take Luna back to the veterinarian who did the spay. It's quite common for the eye to be watery after such a surgery but it is extremely important that Noel wares an ecollar around her neck to prevent her from scratching the eye as she could do herself significant damage if she does.

You should certainly discuss this with your groomer, but I have seen this injury after grooming when a noose is used to stabilize the dog on the table, and either the dog struggles or the noose is too tight, causing the whites of the eyes to become severely blood shot. If the pressure around the neck is too tight, dogs can even experience symptoms of strangulation, including fluid in the lungs.

These bruises happen when blood seeps into the tissue surrounding the surgical site. This usually happens when a dog has a coagulation disorder, or the dog bled a lot during the surgery (for example when spayed during her heat) and then the blood cannot be absorbed quickly enough and seeps into the tissue. If the bruises expand more and should your dog develop white gums or pale gums, then she needs to be seen by your vet who should do a packed cell volume blood test and a coagulation panel. Dogs can easily bleed to death when there is a coagulation problem or continuous bleeding.

Hello. How is Luna feeling overall? If she is playful & active, eating & drinking well, then she may just have a little vaginitis. Keep the area wiped clean with an antiseptic skin wipe & these are usually self-limiting. As for the eye discharge, it is possible that her corneas may have gotten a little dry during her surgery. You can flush the eyes with some artificial tears from your pharmacy, but if any redness develops in the sclera ( white part of the eye ) or any of the tissues around the eye redden or swell ( conjunctivitis ), please see your veterinarian for further diagnostics. I would not say that him having red eyes is ever normal. However if he is really hyper and has been barking at the vet/ pulling on his leash at home he might have red eyes. However if he is having a mild allergy or has a mild upper respiratory infection I would be more concerned. I would recommend taking him back to the vet so they can check them out well and help determine the cause. Also, i bet the vet would like to know that sam eyes are not normal since he left

Without seeing your dog in person we cannot say for certain, but it is possible that this could be a subconjunctival hemorrage. It can be a result of hypertension (elevated blood pressure), trauma, coagulopathy (blood clotting disorder). Usually this goes away on its own eventually, but if he is acting uncomfortable then a vet visit it best. They can test your dog's blood pressure, and be sure there are no signs of a bleeding disorder, and give pain medication if needed to make him more comfortable.
