My puppy has red eyes and drooping lower lids. Is it serious?

That is a very good looking puppy! It can be quite normal for some breeds,including beagles, to have a little bit of droopiness in the lower eyelids. This allows you to visualize their third eyelid, which is the bright pink membrane that you see in the photos. Your pet’s eyes appear normal. Signs of a problem would include squinting, rubbing the eyes as if they are itchy, or a discharge. As Your puppy grows, the droopiness gets less and less. Thank you for your question.

From the photo this looks normal or a mild conjunctivitis. If she’s squinting, the eyes are painful or there is excessive tearing or discharge then please take her in for an eye exam tomorrow. To me it looks like her lower eyelids are more droopy than most dogs and this exposes more of the eyeball. That could result in the redness you are seeing. Again from the photo I’m not overly concerned at this point but I certainly recommend an exam to be sure there isn’t a medical problem that needs treatment. Hi. The white part coming from his lower eye lid that you are seeing is Speck's third eyelid. When the eye is irritated or injured the third eyelid may be more prominent and noticeable. You can gently clean around his eye with a soft cloth and warm water to remove any discharge or any topical allergens. He may have some irritation due to allergies or dust. If he is squinting, holding the eye closed, rubbing it or otherwise acting painful he should be evaluated by his vet. They can look for any foreign body around the eye or may stain the eye to make sure Speck doesn't have a scratch or ulcer. Do not use human OTC eye drops in his eyes.

This white covering you are seeing is likely Tyson's third eyelid, which is a normal part of a dog's anatomy but should only come out when his eyes are closed such as when he is sleeping. When you see it out while his eye is open, that is a sign of illness such as an eye infection or foreign body in the eye. Clearly his eye is bothering him if he is rubbing at it, and you need to put an Ecollar on him to keep him from doing that because he could make the problem worse. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Poor Benny! The redness and drooping of his eye could be due to an eye infection, injury to his eye, or allergies. This is a normal structure of the dog's eye, but it should not be out when the eye is open. When this happens, it's a sign of an eye infection, an injury to the eye, or a condition called Horner's syndrome among other causes. Any eye problem needs to be checked out by a vet promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I'd take him into the vet in the morning. I hope this helps!

This looks normal to me. When dogs are tired or drifting off to sleep its common to see the third eyelid. When he is sitting up and awake, the normal appearance confirms this is normal. It is not cherry eye. Is he having any discharge from his eyes? If so, he may have an infection or some allergies that are making it more prominent. If he is having discharge from his eyes or they seem to be bothering him, take him in to your vet. Otherwise, there isn't cause for concern.
