When should I not give my dog ice cubes, especially if they're hot?

I would only place a few ice cubes in the bowl so that your pet doesn’t get a brain freeze type headache. Otherwise it should be fine. Just also keep in mind that keeping your pet in the shade (if left outside), leaving inside of temperatures are above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and providing fans are more effective methods of cooling off your pet. Yes, ice can be a perfect treat for your puppy. It can keep her entertained, cool her off, and act as a treat without adding any extra calories to her diet. Just be sure to monitor her while she is chewing on the cubes to make sure she doesn't choke. If she does swallow one too quickly or begin to choke don't panic, remember it's only ice and will most likely melt before causing an issue! Your best bet is to enroll Chloe in a good obedience class. There, she will learn to listen to you even with other dogs and people around. Under ordinary circumstances, she should not be too hot. Do not leave her outdoors in high temperatures with no shade or cold water (keep putting ice cubes in her water bowl if she is going to be out longer than 15 minutes). When it is very hot out, only let her stay out for enough time to do her business, and then bring her inside. If your home does not have air conditioning, a fan can be very helpful. Ice cubes in her bowl are a good idea indoors, too, or you can give her one periodically to chew. She cannot stay inside a car, even with the windows open halfway, for even a few minutes while you "run in to pick something up." Cars overheat very, very quickly. You may also find that someone has broken into your can to rescue your dog, which in certain circumstances is legal in places.

Yes, you are correct that ice cubes can crack teeth, so instead of giving Cooper big chunks of ice, you can break it up into smaller pieces that will make it less likely for him to crack a tooth on :-)

That’s very kind of you. Giving them ice won’t hurt the dogs at all. HOWEVER, I would advise you to leave ice on the ground near the dogs rather than hand feeding them. I don’t want a dog to bite you. A stray dog could possibly carry rabies which is a deadly virus that could be contracted through a bite (if a tooth breaks the skin) from an infected animal. Also make sure they have access to shade if they are outside. Please do not feed Cointhee any ice cream or other dairy products. Pets do not have the enzymes to break dairy down and it can cause diarrhea. As long as he has access to cool water to drink, that will be enough. Kisses to Cointhee!

I would first avoid those activities that cause overheating in your pet to begin with. Then if he does get overheated, cooling him off with topical cool water or a water bath is ideal. Just make sure he doesn't drop his temperature too low and never ever use ice cubes or fans to speed up the process. Use caution as wel because overheated pets can have a life threatening heat stroke if their core body temperature gets above 105 degrees Fahrenheit or so.
