Is a fan enough to cool my dog in hot weather? Can dogs eat ice cream?

Keeping fans on to circulate the air and providing plenty of water are great ways to help keep Scout and Benny as cool as possible. I recommend opening any windows as well so that any breezes can help circulate air too. If you do these things, they should be safe to keep in the house in temperatures up to about 90 degrees. I would not play with them or exercise them in this heat as this can cause them to overheat. As a reminder, pets cannot sweat so they have to cool off by panting. If you think either of them are too hot, you can lay cool/wet towels over them and place them in front of a fan to try to actively cool them off. I would monitor them closely for excessive panting, especially if they are laying down and panting for prolonged periods. You can also examine their gum color and if it appears bright red, this can be a sign of heat exhaustion. If you see any of these signs, I would recommend having them evaluated by a veterinarian who can address their potential heat stroke. I hope this is helpful!

It depends on the dog. Your Aura may find it cool enough to be in a room with fan. However, if he keeps panting, drooling and looking unsettled he may need a room with AC to avoid overheating. If you can provide him with AC in the hottest days, please do so. I am sure he will feel better at 18-20C.

You can also have Jasper groomed so that his coat is shorter. Fans and even installing misters outside will help keep Jasper cool. I hope this helps! I would only place a few ice cubes in the bowl so that your pet doesn’t get a brain freeze type headache. Otherwise it should be fine. Just also keep in mind that keeping your pet in the shade (if left outside), leaving inside of temperatures are above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and providing fans are more effective methods of cooling off your pet. You can have a fan just for him, spray him down with a garden hose, provide a baby pool of water for him to go in when he wants or you can shave him down during the hot season. Be sure to provide shade and plenty of water. I wish you both the best!

It would be healthier to keep her out of the sun and provide shelter as well as plenty of fresh, cool water. The ice cream may cause stomach upset and could predispose her to obesity. The curd with rice can be given in small amounts and only occasionally. It should not be the main part of the diet.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dogs typically do not have a complete intolerance to dairy, but as it is not a mainstay of their dietary needs, it can cause GI upset. I typically do not recommend giving dogs straight milk, and lower sugar ice creams can have artificial sugars (such as xylitol) which are toxic to dogs. Regular ice cream or cheese can be fine in small amounts but it based on each individual animal. If you want to give your dog anything dairy as a small treat, only start with one thing in very small amounts to see how Brody tolerates it and ensure he doesn't develop any vomiting/diarrhea.
