Dog's eye worse after vet visit & stain. Is it an allergic reaction?

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 5 years and 8 months old | 6.2 lbs

Went to vet with dog who had pussy eye. Vet gave her Florescent eye stain and thought it ok for antibiotic and we came home. Dogs eye worse than before we went in. She is very agitated and can’t open eye. Tried to wash eye. She has had stain before and not had reaction. Do you think she is allergic to any of the products? Should I give anti biotic even though eye was worse than before going in

I'm so sorry to hear that you are having this problem with Poppy. If your vet numbed the eye and examined it, then the numbing solution may be wearing off which may account for her eye being more irritated now. I have never had a dog have a problem with the fluorescein stain, so I think that is unlikely to be the problem. Dogs can have problems with some medications, so if your vet gave any of the antibiotic medication while in the office, I would contact them before giving more, but if they have not given her any in the office, then they should not be a problem to start at home. Either way, I would recommend contacting your vet, so they know what is going on with Poppy. There are some pain medications that can be given, so they may recommend adding those for Poppy.

    Oh this sounds like Poppy has an allergic reaction to something. Since the welts are increasing and she is not getting better you should take her to a veterinarian or Pet ER today for an exam, possible antihistamine and steroid injection to counteract the allergic reaction.

    Thank you for submitting your question regarding Poppy. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. A red eye can indicate several things. An eye infection is most common in a young dog. This is especially likely if she has also been coughing or sneezing. She could also be experiencing a corneal ulcer which is a scratch across the surface of her eye. More serious conditions include inadequate tear production or a change in pressure in her eyes. Her veterinarian will perform an eye exam and then some tests to differentiate between these conditions. From there, appropriate treatment can be prescribed. In the meantime, do not allow her to paw at her eyes. I hope this information helps!

    Since Poppy has been having this problem for awhile, it would be a good idea to have your vet examine the eye to determine the cause. She could have an infection, dry eye, corneal ulcer/scratch, allergies, etc. Your vet can look at her eye and run some tests, if needed, to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat. Hope she gets better soon!

Hi Gemma, I don't think Poppy is going blind. The glazed look in the eyes is likely from the medication that the vet gave to counteract the reaction. I have never seen a dog go blind from an allergic reaction. It is surely possible but not likely. My recommendation is to keep her calm and quiet tonight and if her eyes don't seem more back to normal tomorrow call your vet back for a consult. I hope this helps. Best wishes to you and Poppy!

Why is my dog's eye inflamed and watering after dental surgery?
It is possible that Poppet's eye issue could be related to dry eyes while under anesthesia, or she may have developed a corneal ulcer/abrasion incidentally. Since eyes are such delicate structures, I would recommend taking Poppet back to her vet for evaluation sooner rather than later. Be sure that she is wearing an e-collar (cone) until you can take her to the vet to prevent Poppet from scratching or rubbing her eye, as this could worsen any existing issue. I hope that she feels better soon!

Hi and thanks for your question this evening on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is not a lot you can do at home for an eye issue such as this, unfortunately. The concern is if has an eye infection, corneal ulcer, or foreign body in the eye which can be very painful and irritating. It is best if Poppy gets seen and treated at his veterinarian soon for this. If not, the issue could get worse and progressively more irritating and potentially damaging to the eye. I hope you are able to take him in soon!

Is my dog acting off after an allergic eye reaction and treatment?
I certainly think it still could be from the reaction - it may be a little painful when her eye cream is put in or it may simply bother her, so this might be why she showed her teeth. If her eye is still swollen at the 24 hour mark you should ask about a recheck since usually an allergic reaction has resolved by then.

My dog's eye is closed after grooming. Is she injured or in pain?

It sounds like your pet Daisy has a very common situation here which is a chemical burn or scratch on her cornea (surface of her eye). This is common after being groomed because shampoo or condition can get on the eye and isn't washed off properly or promptly. Poor girl. I would recommend taking her to your local vet as soon as you can to get her eye examined, tested and treated. Most pets with this condition recovery fully within 7 days time, as long as they receive treatment quickly. I hope that your pet Daisy resolves her eye issue soon! Best of luck and take care.

My dog's eye is suddenly swollen and protruding. Is it an emergency?
This looks like a swelling of Poppy's conjunctiva as opposed to the eye itself. It could be due to an allergic reaction or infection such as conjunctivitis. She will need eye drops and antinflammatories to settle this down so go to your vet as soon as you can. In the mean time pressing a cooled tea bag on the outside of the eye can provide some relief.

My dog's eye is sore and blue after grooming. What should I do?
You can rinse the eye with sterile eye solution to get any product out of the eye. If she's still squinting and the cornea is blueish tomorrow morning please take her in for an exam. She may have a scratch on her cornea which is painful and can result in a corneal ulcer. They will stain the eye and can prescribe medication if needed.
