My dog's eye is shut, raw, and painful. What's the best next step?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Both eyes look quite painful! It appears that there is a severe corneal ulcer on the left eye but hard to say for sure for the right eye. The ulcer appears to be a melting ulcer, which is quite severe. These eyes need the care of an eye specialist and further treatment. Many times, drops alone won't be enough to treat the eye. I would consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh goodness! Poor Paris! Sadly Paris needs to see a Vet for her eye. A painful red eye needs immediate Veterinary care. Possible causes are: a corneal ulcer, infection, allergies, trauma, inflammation or glaucoma. There are specific medications that are safe for the eye and she needs a diagnosis first. I'm so sorry to hear that you are having this problem with Poppy. If your vet numbed the eye and examined it, then the numbing solution may be wearing off which may account for her eye being more irritated now. I have never had a dog have a problem with the fluorescein stain, so I think that is unlikely to be the problem. Dogs can have problems with some medications, so if your vet gave any of the antibiotic medication while in the office, I would contact them before giving more, but if they have not given her any in the office, then they should not be a problem to start at home. Either way, I would recommend contacting your vet, so they know what is going on with Poppy. There are some pain medications that can be given, so they may recommend adding those for Poppy. Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Toots's ( I love that name! ) area around her eye looks very red, inflamed, and painful. The gunk you pulled away might have been eye discharge. This definitely warrants a veterinary exam very soon. Dry eye, corneal irritation or ulcer, bacterial infection, or trauma to the eye are all potential causes among others. I would recommend Toots see her veterinarian for exam eye and a few eye tests so a diagnosis can be made and Toots's eye can get treated. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Finn! When it comes to eyes it is best to have the pet seen as soon as possible. I do not recommend starting any medications without an exam first. The only thin I recommend you do is to out an E-collar on to prevent Finn from rubbing his eye and causing further harm. You can warm compress the eye twice daily. Be sure you can tolerate the temperature first before putting it on his eye. I hope this helps and I wish Finn the very best!

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. There is nothing you can do at home. He needs to be evaluated as soon as possible as this is likely serious and his eye health may be in jeopardy. I highly recommend that you have Tank evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The cornea in the left eye looks very abnormal. I suspect this a corneal ulcer but it is hard to be sure without full clinical examination. The right eye does not look as bad but there is also abnormal looking cornea. Please, take Rey to your local vets taking all the necessary precautions against Covid-19. She should be seen by a vet right away.
