My dog has a persistent eye injury. Is sewing his eye shut necessary?

I would recommend calling the veterinarian that performed the surgery and discussing this with them. Typically when the eye is removed the lids are sewn shut. If Rarzi does not have an elizabethan collar on they I recommend getting one from your local pet store until you can get him to a veterinarian. That will depend on why he has infections there, I think your vet who has seen the socket can better advise you on that. There may be a foreign body in there that may need to be removed, or a tumor, at least something is irritating that side of the head and that will need to be investigated. I think you need to discuss this with your vet and, rather than sowing the eye socket shut, it may only be necessary to debride the area and clean it up and then resuture it.

No....you absolutely can not glue this shut. In order to close this, all of the tear producing structures and the rim of the eyelids have to be surgically cut back until you can just see the skin Then the skin edges are sewn together. . It does not appear from the photo that any of that tissue was removed. This will not seal or close on its own. It will remain open and it will continue to produce tears and remain moist. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What you can do depends to some extent on how extensive or severe this is. You can use a towel to apply pressure on the wound. You can try to keep her as quiet as possible until you can have her evaluated by a veterinarian to avoid the injury getting worse. I highly recommend that you do have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as you are able to. Good luck!

I would take Scruff into a vet now. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. It's clearly hurting him if he won't open his eye, so please have him see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Hamlet! I think the first thing is to be sure Hamlet isn't rubbing the eye or pawing at it causing further damage and injury. He should wear and E-collar. Be very careful to not get the ointment in the eye. Only eye safe antibiotic ointments can go in the eye. You can try the E-collar and the ointment (as long as it is not getting in his eye) for the next few days. If the wound worsens or is not improved by Friday he needs to see your Vet. If he shows any eye discomfort (excessive blinking, keeping the eye closed, excessive tearing, yellow or green eye discharge or the whites of his eye are red) he needs to be seen by a Vet as soon as possible.
