My dog has an infected eye socket. Will surgery help stop infections?

It may be related to the previous injury if the infection was not completely healed. It is a common area to have an infection if there is a tooth root abscess also. Keep the area clean, I would have your vet recheck the area and evaluate the teeth. Often times you need antibiotics and to have the infected tooth removed if that is the case or else it just keep recurring like you are seeing.

I sympathize with you. Painful eyes are very difficult to deal with. The answer to your question depends on if the reason for the problem is that the antibiotics aren't working because of the type of bacteria or the underlying disease. Veterinary ophthalmologists have 4 years of specialized training in treating only eyes, so they have a much greater knowledge of eyes than normal vets. I actually took my 15 year old dog to a veterinary ophthalmologist last month because I want to avoid removing one of his eyes. She used medication that I have never used in my practice in 15 years and my dog is doing great now. I'm assuming that the enterobacter bacteria was cultured from something like a corneal ulcer. This seems like an unusual bacteria for this location - enterobacter is most commonly found in urinary tract infections and occasionally skin infections. Since you know what type of bacteria is present I'm assuming your vet was also able to tailor antibiotic therapy to this specific bacteria as well and if so hopefully the infection will resolve. Sometimes there is irreversible damage done to the eyes and vision cannot return, and other times an infection heals and the eye recovers completely. Hello. When an eye is removed, all of the supporting structures should be removed as well, including any and all tear-producing glands. If there is some sort of fluid accumulating, perhaps there was some glandular tissue left behind or some type of infection. It is also important to make sure there is no issue with an abscessed upper tooth. Poor Hoodie! Good on you for taking him into the vet when he got this eye injury, as any eye problem is an emergency. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what the best course of treatment is for him unfortunately, but I would listen to your vet's recommendations. I'm not sure if he's developed an ulcer from this injury, but sewing the eye shut is done in cases of non-healing injuries to give it extra protection to allow it to heal. There is no guarantee in any aspect of medicine, and your vet will be giving you the best option to help it heal. This is likely to be due to a skin cyst which is getting intermittently infected. Only by removing the capsule of the cyst surgically the problem can resolve as the capsule itself is secreting the white material. I am not sure whether this has been already done or not, but commonly this is the underlying problem. A recurrent and resistant infection may be present as well and ideally a bacterial swap should be perform to rule out this possibility.
