My dog keeps one eye closed. Is it an injury? What should I do?

A closed eye is often a painful eye, and a painful eye should be seen by a veterinarian. A scratch or ulcer of the cornea is the most common reason I see this, although many other problems can cause it as well. Good luck and I hope he improves soon.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Both eyes look quite painful! It appears that there is a severe corneal ulcer on the left eye but hard to say for sure for the right eye. The ulcer appears to be a melting ulcer, which is quite severe. These eyes need the care of an eye specialist and further treatment. Many times, drops alone won't be enough to treat the eye. I would consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.

Yes, if he is reluctant to or struggling to open the eye, I would be very concerned that he may have a scratch or lesion on his cornea. His eye should be examined by a veterinarian to determine if that is a possibility. If so, he would require prescription eye medication. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would recommend having the I examined by a veterinarian so that further testing can be done to rule out possible causes. There could be trauma to the eye itself or an infection. In order to rule these out I would suggest having the vet take a look at the eye. For trauma to the surface of the eye, a simple stain test is performed to see if there is any retention of the stain on any area of the surface of the eye.
