Why is my dog getting diarrhea after eating and what can I do to help?

My dog used to drink milk well, but now is lactose intolerant. Experiences diarrhea after drinking milk. She used to eat met wrll but now has diarrhea after eating. Why is this happening and what should I do?

Most pets do not handle milk well and it will cause diarrhea so I would recommend discontinuing giving milk and other human foods, especially if they are causing diarrhea.

If you think Ginger may have some tummy upset, you can pick up all food and offer a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken, before returning her to her regular diet. Be sure she is being fed a puppy food that is balanced and nutritious to ensure she is doing well.

Having her stool checked for parasites, or taking her in for a vet exam if the diarrhea continues is best, as parasites, illness and other causes can also cause prolonged diarrhea and require treatment to resolve.

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your concerns about North! It sounds like she has a few things going on at the moment. The bumps could be from an allergic reaction or a skin infection. This is something I'd have her seen by a vet for, as the cause needs to be diagnosed in order for it to be treated correctly. Give your vet a call in the morning to make an appointment.

As for the diarrhea, it could be caused by intestinal worms, eating something rotten, a sudden change in diet, GI illness, eating something rotten, or a foreign body. Make sure she is up to date on her deworming treatments, giving her one if she is not. I can also give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 8-12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. I would start her on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. It could be the puppy food she is eating. You can consider starting a probiotic, I like Purina Fortiflora. If the diarrhea doesn't improve I recommend taking her to the Vet or calling them to see what they recommend.

As for the skin, I recommend shaving the fur away and cleaning and drying the skin well multiple times a day. You can apply a topical antibiotic cream like neosporin twice daily.

If Kiki has mild diarrhea but is acting normal and has a good appetite, she may have ingested something she shouldn't have - puppies explore the world with their mouth, and sometimes they eat things that can upset their GI tracts! You can give her some bland food (white rice and lowfat cooked chicken) and see if it improves in the next day or two. Many mild cases of diarrhea are self-limiting and will resolve with bland food. If, however, the diarrhea is severe, or is accompanied by a decreased appetite or vomiting, or continues more than a couple days, Kiki should be seen by a vet. Diarrhea can be caused by many things including stress, diet changes, and infections, and your vet will be able to help differentiate what's going on and start her on medication if needed. My 8-month-old puppy has diarrhea nightly for two weeks. What's wrong?

Poor Daisy! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. Definitely keep her out of the cat box. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. Is my dog's recurring diarrhea caused by daily Greenies or her diet?

HI, some dogs have sensitive stomachs and switching foods is not recommended. One option is to make sure you are feeding her a bland food with a chicken and rice base. I would stay away form the milkbone treats and give a greenie only occasionally, not every day. If you want to be really safe, exclude all treats from her diet unless they are a bland chicken. You can even feed the Hill's ID diet life long if needed. I certainly recommend changing up her diet then staying consistent with it. Good luck, I hope this helps!
