My 8-month-old puppy has diarrhea nightly for two weeks. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shorthaired Pointer | Female | spayed | 9 months and 14 days old | 44 lbs

Hello I have a German shorthaired pointer she’s 8 months and recently for the past two weeks it seems except last weekend she has had diarrhea practically each night we have cats and she may be eating the cat poop but I’ve never seen it she eats fine nothing is different about her except that she has the runs.

Poor Daisy! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. Definitely keep her out of the cat box. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. I hope Daisy starts feeling better quickly! Please feel free to post any additional questions.

Dogs should never have cow's milk or other diary because it causes GI upset. That's why Precious is having diarrhea. You can try a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

You are doing the right thing by giving her chicken and rice, as that's recommended to try if it's thought the diarrhea is caused by GI upset. It could be, however, that Maggie has intestinal worms, which would also cause diarrhea and is coming in young puppies. I would take her into the vet today for an exam with a sample of her feces. The vet can examine her feces under the microscope for signs of worms, and give her a deworming treatment for it.

Diarrhea is never normal in any dog regardless of age, and it can be very serious in a three week old puppy. Newborn puppies can become easily dehydrated from diarrhea, and can quickly go downhill. She could be suffering from intestinal worms or could have a GI illness. She needs veterinary care now for this diarrhea, I would take her, her mother, and her littermates into a vet right away. My dog's yellow diarrhea won't stop. When should I see a vet?

It sounds as though you have already tried most home remedies for Sasha's diarrhea. It is encouraging that her stool firms up with a bland chicken and rice diet. If she is eating, drinking, and acting normally, you could try adding a probiotic (such as Fortiflora) into her new diet. I'm glad that you've looked into limited ingredient foods, but if a food allergy is causing her diarrhea, it can take at least 6-8 weeks to see any improvement related to the diet change. If the mudpies persist despite the probiotics and all of your bland diet attempts, a vet visit is in order. Sasha may have a virus, stomach upset from eating unusual food or foreign material, parasites, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), among other conditions. I hope that she's on the mend soon!

It may take another two to three days. If it is severe and she’s lethargic then please take her in for treatment. Many dogs have sensitive stomachs and the canned food is too rich for them. There are special bland diets to help resolve the diarrhea, or you can feed boiled chicken and rice which should help also.
