Dog has diarrhea 4 weeks after puppies, eating puppy food. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 11 months old

My dog had puppies four weeks ago. Over the past week and a bit she has had diarrhea. We have tried rice but it has not worked. Her behavior is normal, she is eating and drinking fine. Oh she is also eating puppy kibble. Do you have any idea what we should do or what could be wrong?

Hormonal changes or diet changes (such as suddenly switching to the puppy food) can sometimes cause diarrhea post-birth, however if it is continuing, bringing in a fecal sample of Lacey's stool to your vet is a good next step. Your vet can check for common parasites or other issues that could be causing the diarrhea, especially if a bland meal hasn't helped. If the diarrhea continues and the fecal comes back negative, a more thorough exam from your vet is best.
