My dog has diarrhea for 3 days after a Greenie. What can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old

Mia has diarrhea, 3rd day. We are on vacation and am wondering if there is an otc medication. This started after she ate one Kirkland greenie. Otherwise she is active and eating.

Withhold food for 12 hours then offer Mia boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if she is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put her back gradually on her normal food. If she continues having diarrhea , take her to the vet to get treatment.

This sign could be compatible with a gastrointestinal inflammation/infection possibly dietary related.
As a first approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days.
I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

HI, some dogs have sensitive stomachs and switching foods is not recommended. One option is to make sure you are feeding her a bland food with a chicken and rice base. I would stay away form the milkbone treats and give a greenie only occasionally, not every day. If you want to be really safe, exclude all treats from her diet unless they are a bland chicken. My dog has green, runny diarrhea and poops often. What should I do?

Your poor pup! The color of her diarrhea could be from eating a lot of grass, but it could also be from intestinal parasites, rat poisoning, or other illnesses. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Hello, sorry to hear about Rusty. Dietary indiscretions that lead to a decreased appetite, vomiting and even diarrhea may take up to 3-5 days to resolve. You should continue to feed a bland diet consisting or plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese for 5 days to see how his GI tract responds. If the diarrhea continues, then Rusty may need anti-diarrhea medications, probiotics, and to rule out infectious parasites. Have your veterinarian examine Rusty if the he develops bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, or even a severely decreased appetite. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Poor girl. This certainly sounds like an upset stomach situation. You can try a few things today to see if she improves. 1) Bland diet- boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice 2) Probiotic- over the counter Culturelle from your local pharmacy can help restore the normal GI flora 3) Fiber- add 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in her food daily As long as she remains active, does not start excessively vomiting and still has a good appetite, you can try these things for the next 24 hrs or so and see if she gradually improves her condition. Most pets do not handle milk well and it will cause diarrhea so I would recommend discontinuing giving milk and other human foods, especially if they are causing diarrhea. If you think Ginger may have some tummy upset, you can pick up all food and offer a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken, before returning her to her regular diet. Be sure she is being fed a puppy food that is balanced and nutritious to ensure she is doing well. Having her stool checked for parasites, or taking her in for a vet exam if the diarrhea continues is best, as parasites, illness and other causes can also cause prolonged diarrhea and require treatment to resolve.

This may be a sequel to the medications given. I suggest you fast Maggie for 24 hours and then put the dog on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up problem, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.
