Puppy has diarrhea for 2 days. When should I worry and what to do?

  Diarrhea in puppies can result from a viral or bacterial infection or internal parasites. Also any diet change or stress can also cause diarrhea. If it is bloody or vomiting starts with a change in appetite than she needs to be seen by a vet immediately. If not you can try a bland diet such as chicken and rice and check with your vet when able. .

  It is extremely common for a puppy to get diarrhea from a change in diet and the stress caused by coming to a new home. He could also have parasites. If he's acting normal otherwise, you could start by feeding a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and white rice. Feed small amounts more frequently. If the diarrhea resolves, then start to slowly transition him back to a regular puppy food. If the diarrhea continues or he starts to act lethargic, vomit or loses his appetite, I would take him to your veterinarian to have an examination. I would also recommend fecal testing at that time to look for parasites.

  The concern I have for Kiki is how long and how much vomiting and diarrhea she has had. Dehydration is a real concern for a dog her size. It is best that she gets seen by your Vet today. They can decide if she needs blood work or X-rays. They can at least give her fluids, antacids, something to stop the vomiting and medication for her diarrhea. Causes of vomiting and diarrhea are: dietary indiscretion (eating something gross), intestinal parasites, toxins, metabolic conditions (liver, kidney disease), viral and or bacterial infections.
  
  If you want to try her at home, I would withhold food for 12-24 hours and water for 6 hours. In 6 hours offer ice cubes or very small amounts of water. If she stops vomiting then tomorrow start "sip and nibble" of a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs of body wait until stools are normal. If she continues to vomit while being fasted or when food is restarted she needs to be seen.

  We sometimes never know why a dog develops diarrhea but some causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, endocrine diseases like Addison's disease, food allergy or intolerance, reaction to new treat/food/table food.
  
  I would fast her for 12-24 hours to rest the GI tract. The resume feeding with a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 1-2 normal stools. You can also start a probiotic, like Purina Fortiflora. If blood forms in the stool, she won't eat, is lethargic or starts vomiting I would have your Vet examine her. If the bland diet doesn't work I would also have her seen.
  
  Ice cubes are fine. Keep offering small amounts of water and ice chips frequently.
