My kitten is weak. Can Clavamox and lactulose cause this together?

They are safe to use together however clavamox has a high rate of causing nausea/loss of appetite too. Of course consult with your veterinarian as I do not know what condition your little baby has and one of or both of those may be uneccesary. With all of these antibiotics I also definitely recommend a probiotic like benebac gel. Best of luck to you and the kitten!

Constipation is typically not associated with Clavamox. On the contrary diarrhea is often seen. Make sure you are identifying this correctly because pets can strain when they have colitis and diarrhea also. To help with constipation, if this is indeed what is going on, you can try adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in Harpers food daily to help add fiber and promote GI motility. If she still can’t go #2 well after 24 hrs or so, it’s best to have her seen by your vet for a proper exam and an enema. Please use caution because a lot of over the counter enemas contain phosphate which is toxic to pets, and they also don’t tolerate this well, so it’s best to have this done through your vet if needed. I'm not sure exactly what is going on with your kitten, but Clavamox is given to treat many different types of bacterial infections, such as ones of the urinary tract. If your kitten is really dehydrated, bacteria can build up due to him not passing urine, leading to an infection. That may be why your vet prescribed the Clavamox.

Ideally I would have Mittems checked out by your vet and have a stool sample checked for parasites. If he has roundworms it's also possible he has other parasites or coccidia as they are very common in kittens. An over the counter dewormer such as pyrantel or fenbendazole should be safe to give with Clavamox though.

Clavamox, like most antibiotics, can cause upset stomach, nausea and vomiting when given on am empty stomach. The nausea and vomiting may be decreased if you give it with food. Some pets will do just fine taking antibiotics on an empty stomach.

I would contact his veterinarian before discontinuing the medication. Be sure that Oliver has a meal before giving the medication as antibiotics can cause vomiting on an empty stomach. If he continues to have vomiting or diarrhea be sure to let his vet know and they may prescribe a different medication or something to give with the clavamox to help settle his stomach. You can get probiotics for cats at many pet stores, it may be worth starting him on this while he is on antibiotics. I hope Oliver is better soon. Hello. If you can go one step further than the humidifier & use actual steam, that would be better. You can also perform a procedure called coupage where you gently thump the chest with your open hand to try to break up the congestion. I would also talk with your veterinarian about adding another antibiotic to the regimen, especially since doxycycline is generally avoided in kittens. Clavamox or cephalosporins are better first choices. Keep the kitten warm. Ambient temperature should be 85-95 F. Administer glucose orally by rubbing on to the gums. You can use Karo syrup or Nutrical 2-3 times daily. Your kitten may be a little dehydrated. If she is not eating well, talk to your vet about sending home some fluids that you can administer under the skin. This should help with the bowel movements, too.
