Kitten has worms & diarrhea on Clavamox. Can I use OTC dewormer?

No there is not. You will want to have the fecal done to confirm the infection, so that your vet can prescribe an antibiotic as needed, or other treatment options if an infection isn't the cause. Just giving a general antibiotic may not target what is wrong, or may not be the right antibiotic for the specific type of infection.

There should be no problems giving them concurrently as long as they were prescribed by your veterinarian. If anything, together they may cause some loose stool. Try stimulating her with a warm, wet washcloth. Gently circle her back end until she defecates. Do this after each feeding. She should be getting KMR and you can start her on a gruel made of KMR and canned kitten food. Consider a probiotic such as Bene-Bac or ProViable to promote a healthy gut. If she doesn't improve in the next 12-24 hours have her rechecked by your veterinarian.

The Prosense Dewormer packaging label says for kittens under 6 weeks of age give 1/4 teaspoon per 2.5 lbs and is not recommended for kittens under 2.5 lbs. I would ask your veterinarian for another medication that can be used in small kittens (such as pyrantel). The anti-diarrhea medication from Nutri-Vet is okay to give. Kittens are frequently born with roundworms. This is not uncommon. They get roundworms through their mother during pregnancy and during nursing. I hope this helps!

They are safe to use together however clavamox has a high rate of causing nausea/loss of appetite too. Of course consult with your veterinarian as I do not know what condition your little baby has and one of or both of those may be uneccesary. With all of these antibiotics I also definitely recommend a probiotic like benebac gel. Best of luck to you and the kitten!

You may have luck going to the pharmacy to ask your question since your options sound very limited. If the pharmacist isn't positive the medication is safe for cats, post a new question here with the medication and we can help. Most worms in a kitten are roundworms, which can be treated with pyrantel (commonly found over the counter in a pet store in the US). It needs to be dosed twice, 3-4 weeks apart. Tapeworms are flat, and there are also over the counter dewormers for that, as well. It is most likely that Penny has a lot of worms in her digestive tract and that, after vomiting, one of the worms was in her nose and came out when she sneezed.

I am a little concerned about many over-the-counter deworming products as they are often not effective and sometimes even cause some toxicity issues. I recommend a full exam for these kittens by your veterinarian, and a product like pyrantel as a dewomer because it is safe and effective for kittens. This way your vet can see if there is something physically wrong with the kitten that is having trouble passing stools.

I would contact his veterinarian before discontinuing the medication. Be sure that Oliver has a meal before giving the medication as antibiotics can cause vomiting on an empty stomach. If he continues to have vomiting or diarrhea be sure to let his vet know and they may prescribe a different medication or something to give with the clavamox to help settle his stomach. You can get probiotics for cats at many pet stores, it may be worth starting him on this while he is on antibiotics. I hope Oliver is better soon.
