My 11-month-old kitten is vomiting unchewed food. What should I do?

Poor thing! I would continue with the baby food but start mixing some mild canned cat food in. Start with a very small amount and work your way to a predominate cat food mixture. I would also make sure she is dewormed at least twice as many young kittens have GI parasites that can make them vomit (in severe cases)

It sounds like they may be eating too much too fast. Try feeding them the soft canned food (no dry food) in small portions more often so that they do not overload. You may have to feed them the solid food 4 times a day, in addition to maybe 2 additional times of the KMR, but you can phase out the baby cat slowly.

If Smokey only vomited once and is otherwise fine now it's nothing to be overly concerned about. Cats vomit more regularly than other animals, often from hair in the stomach, eating too fast and if they have eaten something else undigestible such as a rodent or insect. Once they vomit up the problem then they are usually fine. When they are lethargic, not eating at all, and have vomiting and diarrhea then I bring them to your veterinarian for treatment. Colby could be eating too quickly and vomiting secondary to that. Since you have changed his food already, I would try offering him a smaller amount and see if he can hold that down, then give him the rest.

I am sorry to hear that Scooter isn’t feeling well. When young cats vomit I do get concerned about the possibility of an intestinal foreign body. If he isn’t feeling well then I would encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. An x-ray will likely be recommended to look for any signs of an obstruction. It may be a dietary intolerance to the Science Diet food. You can try switching to a different brand or try feeding wet food instead of dry. If Gucci still vomits after trying a different food, then there may be another cause for the vomiting, such as hairballs, acid reflux, eating too fast, or even disorders with the stomach or intestines that delay digestion. You can discuss these possibilities with your vet, and they may recommend medications or diagnostics such as ultrasound or a barium study to see if things are moving through his system with the normal speed or not.

What a cute kitten! Offering a meat flavored baby food may help entice him to eat. Warming his food may also allow him to smell it better which will help his appetite. Offer him small meals several times a day as his stomach is too small to eat a lot at one time at this age. Definitely have him rechecked by your veterinarian if he's not eating by tomorrow.
