Is my cat meowing a lot after birth for attention or concern?

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | unspayed

So my cat gave birth just 15 days ago and just after a few days she started meowing so much. During her pregnancy she developed the habit of meowing alot when asking for food so i thought that that was just what it was but its not. Is this just her way of seeking attention or is it something more concerning?

Hello, and thanks for your question about Mino. Cats can meow for lots of reasons, and some are naturally more vocal than others. This can change over. It’s definitely possible that she’s simply looking for social interaction from you - but she also could be asking for more food. Nursing is an enormous energy demand, and so nursing females do need to eat a bit more. So, she may be hungrier than usual! Keep an eye on her weight, and feel free to give her a bit extra food if you notice she’s slimming down at all. Otherwise, just give her a little extra love. :-)

When a cat has kittens there are all kinds of behavioral changes that can occur due to the change in hormones experienced during queening and lactation. She is likely feeling more needy and this is quite normal. You may not be able to figure out exactly what she needs but give her as much attention as she wants and plenty of fresh food and water and handle the kittens as she allows :).

I don’t know that it means anything specific. It sounds like Cece may be most comfortable with you nearby right now. If she has had food and water and she and the kittens don’t seem distressed I wouldn’t worry. As she gets settled in she may be more comfortable on her own.

Hi, are you sure that Peanut gave birth to all her kittens ? Sometimes cats can give birth even the following day ! If not, it could be hunger or just attention seeking. Keep an eye on her and make sure that she is eating, going to the toilet, keep her indoors and leave her in a quiet environment. If you are worried about her, have her checked over.

Hello, yes kittens can have nursing behaviors that include seeking more attention from you and nursing her kitten. However, keep a close eye on her and make sure she is not continuing to have more contractions without being able to produce another kitten. Most frequently, cats will have multiple kittens at birth, not a single one. If you suspect she is not able to deliver the rest of her kittens, then you should consider having her evaluated by her primary care veterinarian for a possible dystocia. My cat just had kittens, why is she pacing and meowing loudly?

Hello, sorry to hear about Buttercup. She may be experiencing some post partum pain. This should improve in several days. Ensure Buttercup is getting adequate amount of food and water. You can offer her kitten food as well while she is nursing. She can eat as ofter as every 6 hours. If her meowing does not improve, if she does not want to eat or drink, she has tremors, or is weak and lethargic, haver her evaluated by your veterinarian immediately. Why is my cat meowing constantly 4 weeks after having kittens?

It could be that Precious has gone into heat again! Cats can go back into heat relatively quickly after having kittens. That would cause her to be more vocal than usual. She could also be more vocal because she's communicating with her kittens. They are born with their eyes shut and their ear canals closed, and they stay that way their first few weeks of life. As their ear canals open, the cat uses her voice to communicate with them. If you don't want Precious to have any more kittens, I would make an appointment with the vet to have her spayed after her kittens are weaned. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Why is my spayed cat randomly meowing a lot but seems otherwise fine?

It is difficult to determine if Khloe's vocalizing is behavior or medically related. Sometimes cat will vocalize like this as a form of communication and behavior. Other times it can mean they are trying to tell you that they are sick or in pain. I would recommend that you look at her closely for the next several hours. Does she seem in pain, does she have normal energy, is she interacting with you? If all of these are yes - that is great and of less concern. Does she have any vomiting or diarrhea, is her appetite OK and is she drinking normal amounts of water. If the answers to this are that she is having a normal appetite and water consumption without any vomiting or diarrhea this is also a very good sign. If that is the case, i would recommend to monitor her at home and continue to watch all of these things very closely. It may be that she is trying to tell you something but it is not at all medically urgent. Please let us know if we can be of any further help. Best of luck to Khloe.
