My cat just had kittens, why is she pacing and meowing loudly?

Hello, yes kittens can have nursing behaviors that include seeking more attention from you and nursing her kitten. However, keep a close eye on her and make sure she is not continuing to have more contractions without being able to produce another kitten. Most frequently, cats will have multiple kittens at birth, not a single one. If you suspect she is not able to deliver the rest of her kittens, then you should consider having her evaluated by her primary care veterinarian for a possible dystocia. Hello, and thanks for your question about Mino. Cats can meow for lots of reasons, and some are naturally more vocal than others. This can change over. It’s definitely possible that she’s simply looking for social interaction from you - but she also could be asking for more food. Nursing is an enormous energy demand, and so nursing females do need to eat a bit more. So, she may be hungrier than usual! Keep an eye on her weight, and feel free to give her a bit extra food if you notice she’s slimming down at all. Otherwise, just give her a little extra love. :-) Hope this helps!

It could just be that she isn't quite sure what to do. Just make sure she has plenty of food and water and a litter box available, as well as a comfortable place to put the kittens. If she isn't eating, seems lethargic, or has a rectal temperature over 103 or under 100, then she should be evaluated by a veterinarian to see what could be going on.

It could be that Precious has gone into heat again! Cats can go back into heat relatively quickly after having kittens. That would cause her to be more vocal than usual. She could also be more vocal because she's communicating with her kittens. They are born with their eyes shut and their ear canals closed, and they stay that way their first few weeks of life. As their ear canals open, the cat uses her voice to communicate with them. I am very concerned about what you describe especially being just 2-3 weeks postpartum. I worry that she may have a uterine infection, a retained fetus, or a possibly mastitis. Poor girl. If she is not eating food, then this is an indicator that she may have an infection. At this age, most of the kittens should be almost weaned off of her, so it is ok if she is not producing a lot of milk. You can start giving them kitten formula mixed with soft canned food at this point and help them wean completely off of mom. Just like humans, there are many reasons Lana may not be interested in food and it is impossible to know without a physical exam. It's possible there are still kittens inside the uterus. Uterine infections are also possible. Unfortunately, both of these can be fatal without treatment. It's also possible this is something like a less severe infection but one cannot know without an exam. Have her examined today and bring the other kittens with her. If she is not feeding the kittens, you will need to take over.
