My cat won't stop meowing and is very clingy. Should I call vet?

Hello, and thanks for your question about Mino. Cats can meow for lots of reasons, and some are naturally more vocal than others. This can change over. It’s definitely possible that she’s simply looking for social interaction from you - but she also could be asking for more food. Nursing is an enormous energy demand, and so nursing females do need to eat a bit more. So, she may be hungrier than usual! Keep an eye on her weight, and feel free to give her a bit extra food if you notice she’s slimming down at all. Otherwise, just give her a little extra love. :-) Hope this helps!

A disease known as hyperthyroidism can cause increased vocalizations in a cat. It is usually accompanied an increase in thirst and urination, hyperactivity, possibly vomiting/ diarrhea and weight loss. She will likely have blood work performed to rule out this as well as other internal diseases. If she is found to be healthy, then you can discuss behavioral modifications at home. Other possible causes are: she sees other cats outside (territorial), anxiety (cats outside, starting heat, changes to house hold), attention seeking, or medical issue. I would close the blinds temporarily, provide environmental enrichment (cat trees, interactive cat toys, lazer pointer, play with her) and consider spaying her. You can also consider a Vet exam to be sure it isn't a medical condition. If she is otherwise fine, I hope that is improves with time and some of the above. Have a great day!

My first thought is quite honestly that calico cats have a reputation for being chatty or vocal, and she may just be developing part of her personality at her age. The next thought is that she could have an uncommon condition that is causing her to go into heat despite her spay. Ectopic ovarian tissue (reproductive tissue that grows in an abnormal place) can cause this, as well as exposure to estrogen containing creams for humans. The easiest test to confirm this is a swab of vaginal tissue. They will be able to guide you through testing and confirming if there is any additional reproductive tissue. Hello, sorry to hear about Ninja. This kind of signs may be seen with multiple abnormalities. It could be ideal to rule out the possibility of an ovarian remnant, as this can continue to produce estrogen and cause signs of heat such as the ones you are experiencing. Other hormone imbalances which can cause these sings include an excess production of thyroid (hyperthyroidism). Cats can also vocalize when feeling ill such as with kidney disease, diabetes, liver disease or pancreatitis. If her meowing continues then I would recommend having her evaluated for an ovarian remnant. If this proves negative then measuring her thyroid hormone and screening her for other metabolic diseases would be ideal. Hope this helps and best of luck.

This is a common behavior in intact females (not spayed). The fact that it has become more frequent makes me wonder if anything has changed with her hormonally like an ovarian tumor. I would have your vet take a look at her when you can to ensure everything looks ok. You can also have her spayed to stop these episodes. I hope this helps!
