Why is my cat licking his rear and having diarrhea after antibiotic?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I want Mittens to get checked out but it's not an emergency. The fact that he is eating and acting normally is huge and a very good thing. It could be that his GI tract has just been very upset by the antibiotics. While you gather the money for a recheck appointment, try a probiotic like Purina FortiFlora (use as directed on the box). You can also add a fiber supplement like Benefiber powder (tasteless- 1 tsp with each meal). Stay on the GI diet given by your vet as this is likely also helpful. If this seems to fix the problem, great! If not, get into the vet as soon as you are able to get other medications for the diarrhea. Best of luck to you and Mittens!

I would recommend seeing the vet. At this point even if the diarrhea was initially related to the antibiotics Jasper may now have a disruption of his normal intestinal flora that requires additional treatment. It's also possible that the diarrhea is unrelated to the antibiotics and instead is due to intestinal parasites or a food sensitivity. If you wait until he stops eating or loses weight he may require more intensive treatment so I'd recommend making an appointment to see your veterinarian this week.

You can try to entice his appetite with things like tuna, tuna water and chicken. If his appetite does not improve by tomorrow, let your veterinarian know as anorexia can be detrimental to a cat's health. Good luck and have a great day!

Poor Chance! He could also be suffering from an Urinary tract infection. A lot of animals who have diarrhea will develop an UTI. What happens in some poop may get on the tip of his penis and then the bacteria will ascend up the urethra and into the bladder causing an infection. The diarrhea may just need a little more time to resolve. When you call the vet tomorrow I would just see if they can recheck him to check his bladder and urine and also to make sure he isn't becoming dehydrated. I hope this helps!

Antibiotics can cause an upset stomach and nausea to make him feel bad. You may need to change foods to a sensitive stomach or prescription diet formula such as Science diet I/D or W/D to help with going to the bathroom. You can also add miralax to the diet, 1/8 teaspoon twice a week. The best things for hair loss is the continue brushing it to get the clumps out. This can be a sign of stress or an infection. Depending on what type of antibiotic you are on, this may treat that skin also. You can add omega 3 fatty acids to the diet to help with the skin and shedding also.

Poor guy. It sounds like your little guy is having an adverse reaction to the medication. He needs to be seen for a rechk by your vet right away to have the diarrhea addressed and then to get him on an alternate medication that will hopefully agree with his system more. There are other medications that are a bit safer for cats that your vet can hopefully prescribe for him, depending on the type of infection he has. Until you can get him in to be seen its best to start some probiotics. You can start over the counter Culturelle and this can help restore some of his natural GI flora and can help some with the diarrhea as well until you can get him in to your vet. I would call your vet right away to let them know that Fenris is both vomiting and having diarrhea. Antibiotics can cause these side effects, and it's very concerning that he is throwing up a lot. Your vet can advise you if they want you to bring Fenris in right away, and if they want you to continue with the antibiotics.
