My cat has diarrhea, won't eat, and is on antibiotics. Is he okay?

Given that Shady will eat treats and has eaten a bit of tuna, then it's fine to give him his antibiotics. Keep offering him the tuna, and keep it in the spring water to get more water into him. Cats aren't naturally big water drinkers, and he may be drinking at night when you are sleeping which you won't see. You can also try soaking the treats in water for him. As for the kaopectate, that is safe to use in cats but not in cases where they have severe diarrhea. If the vet gave you the ok to use it, then they would have felt it's safe for him. I’m so sorry to hear that this is going on with your cat. If the other symptoms have begun to resolve and the anorexia is the only problem then yes, it could be from the antibiotics. If however the initial symptoms have not resolved and now your cat is not eating it is probably due to a progression of the disease. If this is the case, then I would recommend taking your cat back in to have a recheck. He may need additional medications and treatments or he may be at the end stages of his disease. I would recommend to just continue with the current plan for now. If it is just related to the trip, she should start feeling better soon. If her appetite has not improved by tomorrow, let your veterinarian know as the other possibility would be that the antibiotics are causing her to lose her appetite which is a common side effect seen with some antibiotics. It is a bit concerning that he's really not eating enough, and if he's had diarrhea for a few weeks, that would make him feel pretty awful and lead to a decrease in appetite. Given that the Metronidazole didn't fix the diarrhea and he's having a decrease in appetite, I think taking him into the vet again would be best. I'd have him seen today or tomorrow. The fact that he is eating and acting normally is huge and a very good thing. It could be that his GI tract has just been very upset by the antibiotics. While you gather the money for a recheck appointment, try a probiotic like Purina FortiFlora (use as directed on the box). You can also add a fiber supplement like Benefiber powder (tasteless- 1 tsp with each meal). Stay on the GI diet given by your vet as this is likely also helpful. If this seems to fix the problem, great! If not, get into the vet as soon as you are able to get other medications for the diarrhea. Best of luck to you and Mittens!

I would recommend seeing the vet. At this point even if the diarrhea was initially related to the antibiotics Jasper may now have a disruption of his normal intestinal flora that requires additional treatment. It's also possible that the diarrhea is unrelated to the antibiotics and instead is due to intestinal parasites or a food sensitivity. If you wait until he stops eating or loses weight he may require more intensive treatment so I'd recommend making an appointment to see your veterinarian this week.

If his appetite has decreased with antibiotics, I would recommend discontinuing the antibiotics and seeing how his appetite improves. If he continues to be inappetant or is lethargic, I would have the veterinarian recheck him to ensure everything is ok. If he continues to be itchy, I would recommend using a topical shampoo such as Douxo PS shampoo which can be found online quite easily and bathe twice weekly until resolved. I would also recommend using Essential 6 spot on by Dermoscent, which can also be found online. If he continues to be itchy, it may be time to consider switching to a different food or even consider seeing a veterinary dermatologist. I hope this helps!
