Kitten with diarrhea, smelly pee, acting strange. What should I do?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | unneutered | 3.2 lbs

Chance is a three month old kitten recoverinh from Coccidia. He's been on Albon for three days so far, and receiving ointment on his swollen bum. He's still having diahrrea, being very restless and reclusive, and now he's peeing so much i have to change his litter box daily...it also smells horrific. I don't know what else to do for him. When i call his vet tomorrow, what should i do/say?

Poor Chance! He could also be suffering from an Urinary tract infection. A lot of animals who have diarrhea will develop an UTI. What happens in some poop may get on the tip of his penis and then the bacteria will ascend up the urethra and into the bladder causing an infection. The diarrhea may just need a little more time to resolve. When you call the vet tomorrow I would just see if they can recheck him to check his bladder and urine and also to make sure he isn't becoming dehydrated. I hope this helps!

Well, if the blood is in the urine- I would first suspect a urinary tract infection. If the blood is in the stool- he may have an intestinal parasite such as worms or coccidia. He could also have stress induced gastroenteritis, a bacterial infection or other GI.issues. Try to watch him in the box to see if it is from a bowel movement or bloody urine so you know what you are dealing with. I suspect that it is probably in his feces. You could then start out by having him examined and a fecal sample checked. I hope you get to the bottom of the mystery!

Poor guy. It sounds like he may have a really bad urinary tract infection and now has stress colitis due to the UTI being left untreated. He needs to see your local vet for a urine test and also a fecal check to ensure he doesn’t also have intestinal parasites. If he has an uncomplicated UTI then a short course of antibiotics should be able to clear things up. I hope Jojo feed better soon. Best of luck at the vet. Take care.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Shadow. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. Blood in the stool is worrisome. Not making it to the litterbox indicates that he is experiencing urgency with his bowel movements. The veterinarian will examine him and likely test his feces. Based on these results, a treatment plan can be prescribed. I hope this information helps!

Cat has chronic diarrhea & pees when seeing other animals. What to do?

Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Deworm him if indicated. You can also have the vet collect a sterile urine sample to submit for urinalysis and culture to rule out UTI or stones. In the meantime, try a 24 hour fast followed by a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with one tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount. Feed bland until the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. Consider a veterinary probiotic, such as FortiFlora, ProViable or ProStora, to promote gut health. A pheromone product such as Feliway spray or plug in diffuser may decrease any anxiety. A small animal repellant along the border of your property will keep strange animals away and out of sight. Thoroughly clean soiled areas using an enzymatic cleaner such as Nature's Miracle.

My new kitten has diarrhea and smelly gas. Is a vet visit urgent?

Your kitten probably has colitis, which is an inflammation in the colon. This can be caused by stress, diet or changes in diet, and/or intestinal parasites. I would guess that Zia probably has all of these issues going on. It is not too early to take her to the vet. In fact, I would recommend it. Severe diarrhea can lead to dehydration which can be very serious in a little kitten. Your vet will need to check a fecal sample and may prescribe some antibiotics and probiotics and a dewormed for your kitten. I hope this helps. Best of luck. My 4-month-old kitten has diarrhea but acts normal. Should I worry?

I don't think the diarrhea has anything to do with the upper respiratory infection. I would recommend that you call the vet. They may want to test for intestinal parasites or may be concerned about a different bacteria or virus causing the diarrhea. I wouldn't change any food right now, since a sudden change may make the diarrhea worse. If he develops vomiting, decreased appetite, or lethargy, I would definitely have him checked out by the vet.

It sounds like your kitty may have intestinal parasites causing his diarrhea. I would get his poop tested through your vet first to determine what kind of parasite is present so that this is treated for appropriately. My cat has diarrhea and accidents. What can I do until the vet?

Poor Shadow! I am sorry to hear that he is not feeling well. Until you can get Shadow to the vet (which I definitely recommend) you can with hold food for 12- 24hrs, then offer a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice (he may only be interested in the chicken) for about 1 - 2 days. After which you can reintroduce his regular diet. You also want to make sure that both litter boxes are extra clean. Sometimes in multi-cat households one cat decides that he/she no longer is ok using a "used" litter box (cats are wonderful, but have odd behaviors sometimes). It may be worth just keeping them separate so that Shadow has his own personal kitty bathroom until he sees the vet. As I stated earlier, I definitely recommend having Shadow seen by a vet as soon as possible because chronic diarrhea results in dehydration, which in a very small, young kitten we want to address sooner rather than later to prevent progressive potentially severe illness. Poor kitties. It sounds like these kitties likely have an intestinal bug causing their symptoms. I would visit your vet to have their stools tested first to determine what bug is present, and then they can get prescribed the appropriate dewormer.
