My cat is licking, shedding, and sick after antibiotics. Why?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would agree with the veterinarian that the blood work does not look concerning at this time. If his appetite has decreased with antibiotics, I would recommend discontinuing the antibiotics and seeing how his appetite improves. If he continues to be inappetant or is lethargic, I would have the veterinarian recheck him to ensure everything is ok. If he continues to be itchy, I would recommend using a topical shampoo such as Douxo PS shampoo which can be found online quite easily and bathe twice weekly until resolved. I would also recommend using Essential 6 spot on by Dermoscent, which can also be found online. If he continues to be itchy, it may be time to consider switching to a different food or even consider seeing a veterinary dermatologist. I hope this helps! Hair loss can suggest an underlying metabolic disease such as hyperthyroidism. Have your veterinarian run full Bloodwork and a thyroid panel to see if these factors are affecting Sushi’s hair coat as well as making her predisposed to UTIs.

The wipes may be further irritating the area so I would discontinue the wipes and consider trying a topical spray such as Malacetic Conditioning spray (can be found online) and apply twice daily until resolved. This may also be a fungal infection such as ringworm so using the spray will help treat the potential fungal infection. If the area does not improve or it worsens, I would bring Marlow back in for a recheck examination with the previous veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Yes, antibiotics can make cats nauseous. I recommend to call your veterinarian today and tell them what is going on. They will likely recommend a new antibiotic or medication to make Ludo’s belly feel better. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

It is not common for antibiotics to cause hair fall. It is not impossible, but it is not likely. Are you sure it's not just normal shedding? Excessive normal shedding can happen at any time they are sick and will usually resolve on it's own once the dog is well. I would suggest you put her on a probiotic and a good multivitamin. I’m so sorry to hear that this is going on with your cat. If the other symptoms have begun to resolve and the anorexia is the only problem then yes, it could be from the antibiotics. If however the initial symptoms have not resolved and now your cat is not eating it is probably due to a progression of the disease. If this is the case, then I would recommend taking your cat back in to have a recheck. He may need additional medications and treatments or he may be at the end stages of his disease. Hi and thanks for you question. Clindamycin (to my knowledge) should not cause hair to peel off, however, if it sat on her fur for any length of time, it may have caused local irritation. Unless you contact the veterinarian who Rx the liquid form or contacted the product manufacturer, I am unable to tell you exactly what is in the medication that could have been an irritant to her hair. You may want to contact the veterinarian who Rx the product to Misha. I'm glad to hear her skin appears unaffected, however.
