My cat has diarrhea after antibiotics. Should I take him to the vet?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 1 year and 5 months old | 5 lbs

Hi there, my cat was on antibiotics that finished a week and a half ago (for conjunctivitis). He has diarrhea still. I know antibiotics can upset digestion but I thought he would be better by now. He's still acting great and eating so I'm wondering if he needs to see a vet?

I would recommend seeing the vet. At this point even if the diarrhea was initially related to the antibiotics Jasper may now have a disruption of his normal intestinal flora that requires additional treatment. It's also possible that the diarrhea is unrelated to the antibiotics and instead is due to intestinal parasites or a food sensitivity. If you wait until he stops eating or loses weight he may require more intensive treatment so I'd recommend making an appointment to see your veterinarian this week.

    Antibiotics can certainly cause diarrhea as a side effect in some patients. Other causes of diarrhea can include parasites, viruses, gastroenteritis from eating inappropriate food, among others. That said, it sounds as though Jasper's diarrhea is closely correlated with his antibiotic course. Since he is eating well and acting normally, I don't think you need to rush to his vet at this point. Try adding a probiotic, such as Forti Flora, into his diet. If the diarrhea continues after a few days of probiotic usage, he may need to see his vet for further evaluation.

    Hi there! Normally diarrhea from antibiotics resolves pretty quickly. But, since he still has diarrhea it would be great to get him checked out by his vet. There might be some medication that can be prescribed that will help.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Since you are in day 1 of the antibiotics I think it would be fair to give it a bit more time to see if Musika gets better. You can try to entice his appetite with things like tuna, tuna water and chicken. If his appetite does not improve by tomorrow, let your veterinarian know as anorexia can be detrimental to a cat's health. Good luck and have a great day!

Why does my cat still have liquid diarrhea after antibiotics?
Alfie could have a parasite, infection, inflammatory bowel disease, hyperthyroidism, liver/kidney disease, etc. Since it has been a week, it would be a good idea to have full blood work, fecal test, and x-rays done to rule out potential causes. I would also recommend switching to a hypoallergenic diet, like d/d, and see if that helps. A medication called Proviable KP may also help. If your vet didn't already prescribe Metronidazole (Flagyl) than that could be tried, too. If the diarrhea persists than an intestinal biopsy may be needed.

It is very possible the blood is from the irritated colon. The colon gets irritated secondary to the diarrhea. You can try an over the counter probiotic to help good bacteria return to the colon and help stop the diarrhea. If the diarrhea does not resolve he needs to see a vet for possible stronger medications.

I would recommend you take your cat to the vet on Monday. They can do a fecal examination to rule out intestinal parasites and possibly an X-ray to rule out a blockage/foreign body. Your vet can also give you some medication to help stop the diarrhea. If the diarrhea becomes bloody and/or your cat starts vomiting as well then I would recommend getting him in to an ER vet to make sure nothing too serious is going on.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I want Mittens to get checked out but it's not an emergency. The fact that he is eating and acting normally is huge and a very good thing. It could be that his GI tract has just been very upset by the antibiotics. While you gather the money for a recheck appointment, try a probiotic like Purina FortiFlora (use as directed on the box). You can also add a fiber supplement like Benefiber powder (tasteless- 1 tsp with each meal). Stay on the GI diet given by your vet as this is likely also helpful. If this seems to fix the problem, great! If not, get into the vet as soon as you are able to get other medications for the diarrhea. Best of luck to you and Mittens!

If your kitty will eat her food when you add benefiber, it likely will help. The diarrhea could be a side effect of the antibiotic, so you may want to check with your vet about whether the antibiotic should be stopped or changed or the course finished anyway.
