Can my cat safely drink a little eggnog during the holidays?

While you are correct that nutmeg is toxic to cats, a few grains of it will likely do her no harm. It would take a significant amount for it to cause toxic symptoms (tremors, seizures, other nervous system abnormalities), and given that the eggnog was diluted with milk in the cup plus it was diluted in the carton with milk, I would suspect she ingested a very small amount with two or three licks. In addition, there is typically about one teaspoon of nutmeg in a recipe that makes six to seven cups of eggnog, a very small amount. I suspect she will be fine :-)

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Actually most adult cats and dogs are lactose intolerant. In some cats milk or dairy products can cause vomit or diarrhea. But others tolerate it. My opinion is if Jhumru doesn't get sick from milk then there is no reason to stop, but watch for any signs of an upset stomach. Almond milk isn’t toxic, and a small amount would be okay occasionally. Some cats have sensitive stomachs and anything outside of their normal food can cause diarrhea. I also wouldn’t recommend giving any milk with sugar or other sweeteners.

Just like you or I, licking a bit of raw egg could be harmless (just like eating a bit of raw batter), however you can always be unlucky and get a nasty food poisoning. So, likely your kitty will be fine, and I would recommend just monitoring for now. If your cat starts vomiting, is sore, weak, having diarrhea, then it might be gastritis or food poisoning from the egg, which would require some medications and a vet visit to fix up. Just monitor for now though, as likely it will be fine. Best of luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Cats and dogs are actually lactose intolerant and dairy products can cause tummy upset consisting of vomiting and/or diarrhea. If Tilly tolerates yogurt just give it in moderation. I hope this helps!

It is okay to give your cat egg every once in a while as a treat, but should not be an every day event as eggs do have quite a bit of fat in them that could cause an upset stomach for a small 6 lb cat.
