My mare is acting weird after birth. Could she be having twins?

Horses need to pass the afterbirth within 1 hour or the placenta is considered retained. This can lead to serious infections of the uterus or reproductive tissues. Please call your vet right away because it is important that she have an examination. They can be sure that she passed the complete placenta or they will flush her out and administer antibiotics.

Hello. While I have seen stallions be very gentle with newborns, if I had a choice, I would allow the mare to foal in the other pasture. Try to be there when she goes into labor & you should be able to shoo away nosey neighbors. Once the foal is on her feet, Mom will be protective enough to deal with the other mare & colt. If Sophie is sweating and trying to lay down or appears in distress at all I would recomend calling an equine vet now. Sweating, protruding veins can be signs of pain or discomfort and if she is constantly trying to lay down that is not typical behavior. She may be colicky or possibly miscarrying the foal. Try keeping her on her feet and walking as you get in touch with a vet. Do not let her down to roll. If she is kicking or biting at her flank those are further signs that she has abdominal pain. The gestation length of a horse is 320-362 days. If Buttermilk is still within this time period, then yes she could still be pregnant. Hello, again. As I said earlier, it depends when, or how long ago she was with the colt. Size may matter, but sometimes where there is a will, there is a way. It is possible that your mare may be trying to colic, so the best thing to do is get a vet out to check. Horses are pregnant about 330 days, & it is usually only in the last few months that you can see the foal kicking or moving inside. Hello. I am not sure why you waited so long to consider aborting your mare, but I would council against doing so at this late date. Administering a drug to abort a mare is a common practice very early in pregnancies, but now you would need to do multiple injections, manually dilate the cervix or use another medication to do so, watch as the mare delivers a live fetus that may need to be euthanized, & deal with the very real possibility of retained fetal membranes which can lead to metritis & founder. I would have an equine vet come out to examine Cleiopatra. The vet can do a rectal exam and ultrasound to confirm if she is pregnant or not. If she is pregnant, I would say she would be due soon if she was mated in late January/early February as a horse's gestation lasts 335-360 days. Along with c confirming the pregnancy, the vet can give you an estimate of how far along she is in the pregnancy. While there, the vet can treat her rain scald as well.
