What to do if my young puppy is sick, crying, and has diarrhea?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 2 lbs

I was given a puppy that was taken from the mom way to soon was told puppy is month old but looks Alot smaller then that I got it milk and bottle but won't drink it eats can food but gets sick and has poops but don't get up to poop lays there and poops and lays in it and it cries 24/7 what can If anything I do for it

Hello, sorry to hear about Princess. At a month old, Princess can start to be weaned off mom and switched over to soft foods (wet down dry food or canned food). On those pictures and based on what you're describing, it sounds like Princess may be sick. Her unwillingness to move and crying may be associated with pain. This can be caused by a high number of worms or if she is having a viral disease (in a puppy with unknown history, biggest concern would be Parvovirus). I would recommend having your veterinarian evaluate Princess and test her for Parvovirus and worms. Otherwise, Princess could be continued to be fed both Formula (if she will drink it) and canned food for the next week or two while you completely wean her off the bottle and switch her to soft foods. If Princess is still having this issue then I would recommend bringing her to a veterinarian as soon as possible.

It sounds like she has an upset stomach but with her age there are other things and certain viruses to look for. A lot of times when a dog is not pooping, they previously had diarrhea and now just haven nothing in their colon. This makes them look constipated when they are not.

Your veterinarian can do a rectal to see if Princess is constipated vs just recently had diarrhea.

They can also give medication to help stop the vomiting and provide hydrated to Princess.

Since she is having vomiting and diarrhea I would really concerned about her getting dehydrated and weak. She could have something serious going on like parvo virus or a lot of intestinal parasites. Constant crying can be a sign of failure to thrive in a puppy. If this is the only puppy with diarrhea it could be a concern as well. I’d recommend having your vet examine the puppy to determine what might be going on. They might recommend medications or this pup may need to be supplemented with a bottle to make sure he is getting enough nutrition.

Poor Princess! It sounds like she may be constipated - but if she's so severely constipated that she's crying and vomiting, this is a serious problem that needs immediate veterinary care, not something that can be treated at home. I would recommend taking her to the vet right away for an exam. He/she can palpate her abdomen and take x-rays if needed to help determine why she can't poop, and get her started on appropriate treatment. For severe constipation, this may mean giving her a manual enema under sedation to remove the impacted feces.

Why is my puppy dull with diarrhea after a sudden food change?

Hi there! Sorry to hear that she is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start her on anti-diarrhea medications. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your girl!

Why is my new puppy throwing up, having diarrhea, and not eating?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nala! The crying is normal for an 8 week old puppy in a new home. The vomiting and diarrhea is not normal and is not anxiety. Possible causes of vomiting and diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral (especially parvo) or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, reaction to new food/treats or a food allergy. Nala is very young and small. Not eating well combined with vomiting and diarrhea predisposes her to dehydration and low blood sugar risks. I highly recommend having her seen today and bring a stool sample. Also bring any paper work indicating recent vaccinations and dewormings. I wish you and Nala the best!

Why is my puppy crying, not eating, and peeing constantly on vacation?

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy! With these symptoms I would recommend finding a vet in the area to examine her. I would be concerned she could have a urinary tract infection or be suffering from constipation. If you have any canned pumpkin you can give her a teaspoon or two added to her food to try to help if it is constipation, but it sounds like she needs to see the vet for an exam!
