Cut dog's nail too short, it's bleeding. How to stop it and prevent re-injury?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 4 days old | 50 lbs

I trimmed her nails this morning and I guess cut them too short or cut the same 1 two times because she never stays still for more than 10 seconds and so she busted the nail open and was bleeding but not large amounts or pouring blood so I did the flour and water paste mixture and dipped her paw in it and then put sterile gauze and a bandage around it and she tore the bandage off so I don't know what else to do. What can I do to keep her from busting it open again?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that you accidentally cut Zena's nail too short today. As long as she is healthy with no underlying clotting diseases, her nail should stop bleeding on its own within 10-15 minutes with pressure applied. You can use a paper towel or rag and hold it firmly against her nail for 5-10 minutes to apply pressure and staunch the bleeding. I do not recommend trying to bandage the foot - bandages can cause more harm than good sometimes. You can try to reduce her activity today by restricting her to one area of the house (preferably without carpet!) so that she cannot run around. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Zena!

Hello. This happens frequently. Apply gentle pressure with a paper towel with either flour or corn starch. Hold it there for 2-3 minutes. Reapply some more flour or corn starch if needed and continue to apply gentle pressure.

This happens! I've done it to my pets on accident. Try dipping her nail in styptic powder or cornstarch. That should stop the bleeding. I hope this helps!

Poor little one. It can be hard to trim nails, and sometimes we unintentionally go too far. It sound like you have done the right thing. Most likely when you unwrap the paw the bleeding will have stopped, but if not you can apply pressure for longer. Sometimes they bleed enough that we need to bandage the paw overnight. I don't recommend doing this at home, because if a bandage is applied too tight, it can do more damage. There are products sold at pet stores to help stop the bleeding. These can be nice to have on hand for the future. When the bleeding has stopped, you don't need to do anything additional for you little one, other than give lots of treats the next time you trim the nails, and try not to go too short. When this happens repeatedly, our pets will become fearful, and it becomes very difficult to trim the nails. Give her lots of love, and I'm sure she will forgive you.

Poor girl. This happens even to the best nail trimmers. He only thing that will successfully stop a bleeding nail every time is an over the counter Kwik Stop styptic powder from your local pet store. It is good that it has stopped bleeding; however, I would pick up some of this powder from the store first thing in the morning. Otherwise, place newspaper in the litter box tonight and monitor it until you go to bed. A light bandage can also be tried; however, cats in particular won't allow a bandage to stay in place. Hopefully things have stabilized for now and she will continue to do well until morning. Most of these nail bleeding situations are fine and don't result in serious complications (i.e. anemia). My pet's nail is broken and bleeding. What should I do right now?

Clip the nail carefully. If there is bleeding, gentle pressure and some Quik Stop powder or plain cornstarch should stop it. Clean daily with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. A dab of a triple antibiotic may be applied if necessary. Monitor for redness, swelling or lethargy. If she won't allow you to clip the nail, she may need to be seen by your veterinarian. Clip the other nails a bit to prevent snagging.

My dog's nail is pulled off and the quick is exposed. What to do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you can remove the nail that is remaining, I would. You can cut the quick, too, if needed. If it bleeds, thickly apply something powdered, like corn starch or flour, to clot the blood. Then place a bandage over the nail for no longer than 24 hours. You MUST take the bandage off in 24 hours and do not place it tightly. If Rex is licking the area, he could cause an infection, so monitor for any swelling, discharge, or redness until the new nail grows. You can also soak the paw in an Epsom salt bath to soothe the area (make sure it is dry before applying the bandage). I cannot stress enough that he cannot wear the bandage longer than 24 hours. My dog's nail broke at the base and is bleeding. What should I do?

Hello. This is such a common injury in dogs. Veterinarians deal with this by cutting the nail at the break & then applying an antibiotic cream mixed with a little lidocaine to stop the pain. The foot stays bandaged for a couple of days until the sensitive tissue starts to heal. From here, the nail will begin to grow out & Jack will be back to his old self. Dog nail cut too short: When can it get wet without bleeding?

It should heal enough within 24-48 hours for it not to bleed again when exposed to moisture. You can put on a doggie bootie or even a toddler sock in the meantime for walks outside (remove it once Lola comes inside as moisture retained in the bootie or sock is not ideal either). If you have a bandage on still, be sure to check her toes every few hours to make sure that they are still warm/that the bandage is not too tight (sometimes they can tighten on their own and even cause the paw to swell). It’s likely not necessary but you can also try applying liquid bandage that can be found in most drug stores/pharmacies. (vet’s often use a different version as tissue/surgery glue.) Good luck!

Poor Max! Apply cornstarch to the broken end. Be careful as broken nails can hurt and dogs may bite due to pain.
