My dog's nail broke off and won't stop bleeding. What can I do?

Clip the nail carefully. If there is bleeding, gentle pressure and some Quik Stop powder or plain cornstarch should stop it. Clean daily with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. A dab of a triple antibiotic may be applied if necessary. Monitor for redness, swelling or lethargy. If she won't allow you to clip the nail, she may need to be seen by your veterinarian. Clip the other nails a bit to prevent snagging.

Hello. This is such a common injury in dogs. Veterinarians deal with this by cutting the nail at the break & then applying an antibiotic cream mixed with a little lidocaine to stop the pain. The foot stays bandaged for a couple of days until the sensitive tissue starts to heal. From here, the nail will begin to grow out & Jack will be back to his old self. Hello. I wouldn't recommend cutting the nail as the quik will bleed forever and it will be painful. What we typically do is grab the nail with hemostats and pull very quickly. This leaves the quik in place but removes the nail that is broken. I spray with local anesthetic spray first. If it bleeds after some flour or baking soda can help stop it. If you don't feel comfortable pulling it off, or don't have hemostats to properly grab the nail, I would recommend having it done by a vet. That way some local anesthetic can be used as well.

Ouch, poor Milo! Unfortunately, the quick can bleed a lot! You can try dipping his nail in styptic powder or cornstarch, as both of these may stop the bleeding. I wouldn't panic about it just yet, it is normal that the quick bleeds a lot, so I do recommend following your vet's advice to watch it for now.

As long as she is healthy with no underlying clotting diseases, her nail should stop bleeding on its own within 10-15 minutes with pressure applied. You can use a paper towel or rag and hold it firmly against her nail for 5-10 minutes to apply pressure and staunch the bleeding. I do not recommend trying to bandage the foot - bandages can cause more harm than good sometimes. You can try to reduce her activity today by restricting her to one area of the house (preferably without carpet!) so that she cannot run around. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Zena!

Try dipping the nail in styptic powder or cornstarch to see if that helps stop the bleeding. If it does not, I would contact Poppy's vet. The blood loss won't be enough to cause any serious problems, but it should be treated right away if you can't stop the bleeding. I hope this helps!

Poor guy. His nail is bleeding because the kwik (nail nerve) is exposed there. You will need to go to the pet store and pick up Kwik-stop styptic powder and apply it to the exposed kwik (pink area) underneath the nail to get this to stop. Petsmart, Petco or any other local pet store should have this readily available for you to pick up. If they are not open, any vet clinic will be more than happy to apply this for you, because every clinic has this in stock. You don't have to stop walking him, but perhaps he will need another application of the kwik stop if he starts bleeding again. Also you can try walking him on the ground (dirt) instead of cement, which should be less abrasive on his nails. : ) I hope that you can get Hobbes nail to stop bleeding soon.
