Dog nail cut too short: When can it get wet without bleeding?

As long as she is healthy with no underlying clotting diseases, her nail should stop bleeding on its own within 10-15 minutes with pressure applied. You can use a paper towel or rag and hold it firmly against her nail for 5-10 minutes to apply pressure and staunch the bleeding. I do not recommend trying to bandage the foot - bandages can cause more harm than good sometimes. You can try to reduce her activity today by restricting her to one area of the house (preferably without carpet!) so that she cannot run around. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Zena!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you can remove the nail that is remaining, I would. You can cut the quick, too, if needed. If it bleeds, thickly apply something powdered, like corn starch or flour, to clot the blood. Then place a bandage over the nail for no longer than 24 hours. You MUST take the bandage off in 24 hours and do not place it tightly. If Rex is licking the area, he could cause an infection, so monitor for any swelling, discharge, or redness until the new nail grows. You can also soak the paw in an Epsom salt bath to soothe the area (make sure it is dry before applying the bandage). I cannot stress enough that he cannot wear the bandage longer than 24 hours. You can use both. A thin layer of iodine ointment will serve to help prevent infection. The Woun’ dres can be applied over it. If Caesar is likely to lick it, I recommend an e-collar. He may chew and eat a bandage if he isn’t wearing an e-collar. Bandages are also tricky because they can trap moisture and can tighten, cutting off circulation to the paw. I would continue applying both three times a day until the nail bed appears completely dry and scabbed over. You can place a toddler sock or a bootie over the paw when you take Caesar outside to pee and poop but I would avoid long walks for the next week. Good luck!

You can dip Cash's toe nail into a bar of soap which will close it off and stop the bleeding/seal it. Leave the sock on until tomorrow, then take it off and see whether Cash leaves it alone. If not, put the sock back on for a few days, and it should be healed by then and Cash should leave his toe alone.

Poor guy. His nail is bleeding because the kwik (nail nerve) is exposed there. You will need to go to the pet store and pick up Kwik-stop styptic powder and apply it to the exposed kwik (pink area) underneath the nail to get this to stop. Petsmart, Petco or any other local pet store should have this readily available for you to pick up. If they are not open, any vet clinic will be more than happy to apply this for you, because every clinic has this in stock. You don't have to stop walking him, but perhaps he will need another application of the kwik stop if he starts bleeding again. Also you can try walking him on the ground (dirt) instead of cement, which should be less abrasive on his nails. : ) I hope that you can get Hobbes nail to stop bleeding soon. It sounds like he tore off the nail. You can stop the bleeding using styptic powder, it’s what men use after cutting themselves shaving. I would get a cone to prevent licking, they should have them at Walmart or PetCo. I wouldn’t wrap the foot but soaking it in warm water to clean it after it stops bleeding will help prevent infection. Leaving it open to the air will let it dry and toughen up. There is no safe over the counter pain medication, especially for a small dog like yours. This shouldn’t be that painful after a day or so, just limit the walking to short potty walks only. Ouch, poor Milo! Unfortunately, the quick can bleed a lot! You can try dipping his nail in styptic powder or cornstarch, as both of these may stop the bleeding. I wouldn't panic about it just yet, it is normal that the quick bleeds a lot, so I do recommend following your vet's advice to watch it for now.
