My dog's nail broke at the base and is bleeding. What should I do?

Clip the nail carefully. If there is bleeding, gentle pressure and some Quik Stop powder or plain cornstarch should stop it. Clean daily with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. A dab of a triple antibiotic may be applied if necessary. Monitor for redness, swelling or lethargy. If she won't allow you to clip the nail, she may need to be seen by your veterinarian. Clip the other nails a bit to prevent snagging.

Now this is likely going to continue to improve slowly but it will take time to do so. If he appears to be painful, it would be best to go to a veterinarian as they can proceed to cut the rest of the nail so it heals quicker and also send him home on pain control medications. Poor Max! Apply cornstarch to the broken end. Be careful as broken nails can hurt and dogs may bite due to pain. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. So sorry this happened to Frank. If it is not causing him any issues and it is not bleeding then you don't really need to take him to the vet. If he starts limping or the toe becomes swollen, etc then you will need to get him to a vet at that time. I recommend you get this spray wound gel to apply to it (link below, use as directed). I would not do any vigorous cleaning as you may disrupt any blood clots that will then cause it to bleed. If he licks it too much it may get infected. We do not want him to lick the wound gel off either as that will defeat the purpose of using it. One of our biggest concerns with a broken nail where the quick is exposed is that the dog will infect the area by licking it. In order to prevent that, I will sometimes recommend an e-collar or a having the dog wear a bootie to prevent licking. Some owners decide to bandage the area, but you have to be very careful to keep the bandage clean and dry or it will worsen an infection. If a dog has already licked a quick, I will usually recommend soaking the foot in Epsom Salts (following the instructions on the box for making it up) for 5 minutes then just drying it well. Some dogs are so painful that they will not leave a quick alone and will require pain medications. If at any time the quick is red or has a discharge or odor, then it might be infected and your veterinarian should examine it. Limping means he is in pain, and the fact that he bites you when you try to touch it means he's really hurt. I would take him into a vet now. The vet can sedate him, and can remove the rest of the nail safely. He will also need pain medications and antibiotics, which the vet can prescribe. I recommend taking him into a vet immediately. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jack! Accidents happen and nail trims can be hard especially on pugs. They are the hardest breeds for nail trims, even at the Vet. If he is very squirmy and dislikes nail trims consider having it done at your Vet office and consider sedation. It may cost more but maybe we can avoid cutting the quick. Plus stressing out a pug is not a good idea. With that being said, If Jack is not limping, isn't excessively licking the nail and it isn't bleeding just keep the nail clean. If any of the above is happening then I would take him to the Vet for antibiotics, a bandage and pain medications. It should heal with out any complications for continued growth of the nail.
