My cat's nail bled after I clipped it too short. What should I do?

Hi! I was trimming my cats nails tonight and for the first time I accidentally clipped one nail on her back foot a little bit too short. It was bleeding a bit right after, however the bleeding has slowed down/pretty much stopped. It doesn't seem to be bugging her, but because this is the first time I've done this I wanted to check if there's anything I need to do/should do to help prevent it from bleeding again and to help her nail heal. Thank you in advance!

Poor girl. This happens even to the best nail trimmers. He only thing that will successfully stop a bleeding nail every time is an over the counter Kwik Stop styptic powder from your local pet store. It is good that it has stopped bleeding; however, I would pick up some of this powder from the store first thing in the morning. Otherwise, place newspaper in the litter box tonight and monitor it until you go to bed. A light bandage can also be tried; however, cats in particular won't allow a bandage to stay in place. Hopefully things have stabilized for now and she will continue to do well until morning. Most of these nail bleeding situations are fine and don't result in serious complications (i.e. anemia). Poor Thurop! Sometimes this happens when trimming nails. You can put a pinch of cornstarch or flour on the bleeding end of the nail to help it clot. If this doesn't work, you can get Quick Stop styptic powder at most pet stores, which is made for this purpose.

This is a common issue! It is hard to trim nails when our loved ones are moving. If you do cut the nail to short I would recommend applying a little flour or cornstarch to the nail with light pressure. This should allow the bleeding to stop.

You can try using corn starch or all purpose flour - it can also help blood clot. If you have access to bandage material you could also try placing a bandage although it can be difficult to get a bandage to stay on a paw - make sure you don't wrap anything too tight!

Clip the nail carefully. If there is bleeding, gentle pressure and some Quik Stop powder or plain cornstarch should stop it. Clean daily with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. Cut kitten's quick, no bleeding, but nail is red. Should I worry?

Flour is a great way to stop a quick from bleeding. Unfortunately, I've had to use that trick myself to get a quick to stop bleeding. When we hit the quick when trimming nails, the biggest problems are that it bleeds and it hurts. That blood can get underneath the layers of the nail (similar to when we have bleeding under our nails) which is probably why it is red. That may change to purple and look bruised in the next couple of days, but it will heal. The other thing you need to make sure when trimming Mona's nails in the future that you use treats or verbal praise to make sure she is comfortable for nail trims. Most kittens are pretty forgiving for nail trims, so don't worry about it, but make sure future nail trims are good experiences, so she doesn't start to dislike them. Congrats on your new kitten! Cut dog's nail too short, it's bleeding. How to stop it and prevent re-injury?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that you accidentally cut Zena's nail too short today. As long as she is healthy with no underlying clotting diseases, her nail should stop bleeding on its own within 10-15 minutes with pressure applied. You can use a paper towel or rag and hold it firmly against her nail for 5-10 minutes to apply pressure and staunch the bleeding. I do not recommend trying to bandage the foot - bandages can cause more harm than good sometimes. You can try to reduce her activity today by restricting her to one area of the house (preferably without carpet!) so that she cannot run around. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Zena!

My cat's paw is bleeding and looks like a ripped claw. What do I do?

If it currently bleeding you can use some corn starch to help slow the bleeding. Also if you are able to place a light bandage on it to prevent him from licking it tonight that would be good. You can also use a cone collar which you can find at your local pet store if it is still open. I would take him to your vet first thing in the morning for an exam. He may need to have it cleaned, medicated and professionally wrapped. Your vet will also be able to provide antibiotics and pain meds if need. If it is profusely bleeding then I would take him to your local emergency clinic for attention tonight. I hope this helps!

My rat lost a nail and it's bleeding. What should I do to stop it?

Ouch, that can be a very painful condition when the raw nail bed is exposed or the nail isn't completely torn off. The nail bed does tend to bleed a lot. The best way to stop the bleeding is Styptic powder or Kwikstop, which are used for dogs who had their nails trimmer too short on accident. If you have some of that around, pour out a a bit (around 1/4 or 1/8th teaspoon) and dip your rat's bleeding foot/toe in it, then apply light pressure. You may need to repeat that a few times. If you don't have an styptic powder, do the same thing with flour or cornstarch. It will take a bit longer to stop the bleeding. Finally, if you can't stop the bleeding, he's limping, won't eat/drink/rest normally, or the bleeding keep starting again, he'll need to go the vet to make sure he doesn't need pain meds or antibiotics and to make sure the nail is fully removed. Poor Kitty. Try to apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding. Put an Ecollar on her to keep her from licking it, as that can make it worse. You can make one at home or buy one at a pet store. Having her seen by a vet tomorrow is a good idea.
