My puppy has watery eyes and tear marks. Could it be allergies?

She could have a problem with her tear duct, allergies, or it might be that she has a hair, eyelash or something causing irritation. Since this is a chronic problem, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can prescribe an anti-histamine, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or other medications, if needed.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ruby. Tear staining can be common in small breed dogs. At her next veterinarian appointment, I would ask about it though. If she has an eyelash growing in the wrong direction it can irritate the surface of her eye. Allergies or and an eye infection can cause this as well. If only one eye is affected, then I worry about a scratch across her eye. If her eyes are red, the discharge is yellow or green or if she is squinting, then she needs to see her veterinarian. If it is clear discharge and the eyes are otherwise normal, then I would have it checked at her next appointment. I hope this information helps!

Hi there and thanks for your posting! Watery eyes can be a sign of an environmental allergy like pollen or dust or just caused by excessive hair growth around the eyes leading to eye irritation. You may want to try an prescription antihistimine to see if that helps at all. Diseases of the tear duct, like a tear duct blockage can also cause excessive watery eyes. This could be related to the active chewing/swallowing affecting the drainage of tears or may even be due to a sensitivity to certain ingredients. I would try transitioning her to a hydrolyzed diet such as royal canin anallergenic for an 8 week trial period to rule in or out any food sensitivities. If negative, flushing the tear ducts and a full oral/throat exam under sedation may help to identify any blockages

The most common cause of tears developing on the face on the inner corner of the eyes would be a problem the the nasolacrimal or tear ducts. These are tiny tubes that connect the inner corner of the eyelids with the nostril and in a normal pet tears that lubricate the eyes will then flow through these ducts into the nostril. If the ducts become obstructed then the tears spill over onto the face. I would recommend an exam at your vet to see if this is the issue. Sometimes the ducts can be flushed and reopened.

Place an e-collar cone on him to prevent rubbing or pawing at the eyes. Consider a recheck with your veterinarian or a veterinary opthalmologist to diagnose eye infection or injury. Certain OTC antihistamines can be used but only under the direction and guidance of your veterinarian.

There are over the counter eye drops that work well in eye allergy cases or a steroid drop from your vet. If they are still watering, I would ask the vet for a steroid eye drop and try this for a month to see if it helps. I hope this helps!
