My dog has watery eyes and is less playful. Normal or concerning?

Hello, sorry to hear about Pax. It could be that he is having normal eye secretions that are becoming stuck on his fur. As long as he is not itching at his eyes, having profuse persistent discharge, squinting, or having a red eye then I would continue to monitor him. You can use a damp cotton ball to wipe the fur around his eye and keep it clean. If the discharge worsens, or if he develops any sneezing or nasal discharge then you should have him evaluated by a veterinarian as this may indicate an upper respiratory infection. He is so cute! This can be a very normal thing is dogs like him. I wouldn’t be too worried unless he is ever favoring his eyes or if the discharge become thick and green or yellow. Hello. I would not say that weepy eyes are normal for any puppy. It is a little difficult to say from the photo, but I get the impression that there is a little inflammation in the skin around the eyes, & maybe even a little hair loss. In puppies, this could just be a mild infection, or even the presence of demodectic mange. A simple skin scrape can determine if this is mange, & it is generally pretty easy to clear up. If this is the puppy you have your heart set on, then have the breeder take him to their veterinarian with the stipulation that all clinical notes are sent to your veterinarian. If this is not possible, then I would make some arrangement to take your new puppy to your veterinarian within a day or so of you obtaining him. You can discuss if anything is found, how much the breeder might compensate you for the cost of the puppy, if you like. Otherwise, he is a beautiful puppy! This is very concerning as, while her vaccinations were done on time, she is not fully protected against distemper and parvo yet. Purulent discharge from her nose and eyes are concerning as they could , of course be a simple respiratory infection, but also a sign of canine distemper. Please take your puppy to a veterinarian for an exam and some diagnostics.

Hello, thank you for your question about Rupert. Based on the symptoms you describe it is possibly that Rupert may have a viral upper respiratory infection. If Rupert is otherwise acting ok and is not rubbing/scratching at his eyes I believe that it is ok to continue to monitor him. Puppies depending on their age can sleep quite a bit and not be very playful if for example less than 2 months of age. If your pup is older and you think may be sick due to other symptoms, it would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, your pup may be fine. Yes, I would take Romeo into a vet today if possible. It could be he has an eye infection, or may have injured his eye. Any problem with the eye needs to be checked out promptly, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I hope this helps!
