What to do if my 3-month-old Yorkie puppy has clear watery eyes?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buttercup. It is difficult to say without seeing a picture, but a lot of small breed dogs will experience epiphora or clear tearing of the eyes. As along as it is clear, the eye is not red and the dog is not squinting, it is generally not an issue. However, if it is new and only one eye, you will want to have her evaluated by her veterinarian. She can have an eyelash contacting the surface of her eye causing irritation. Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. It sounds like his eye is sore between him keeping it closed and the discharge accumulating on it. He will need to see his veterinarian as he could have a scratch across the surface of the eye. This is tested for by placing a drop of dye on the surface of his eye. Based on the results, his veterinarian will likely prescribe an eye medication. In the meantime, keep the eye clear of any discharge and do not allow him to alpaw at it. The sensitivity to light is a sign of pain. I wiukd first be worried about an ulcer on the cornea. This can cause pain and a discharge and easy to test for. Glaucoma can have a big eye and a red eye, not usually squinting. An eye infection can also cause these issues along with a dry eye. Your vet can check the tear production and look for an ulcer as each one has medicine that can correct this

This certainly is a good amount of gunk build-up. It seems to be excessive tearing if there is no yellow discharge seen at any point. I would recommend having him groomed and the hair clipped away around the eyes so that the build up does not accumulate in the hair. Also cleaning the eyes daily with a warm clean cloth can help prevent build up and irritation. Poodles are notorious for excessive tear production so this is very common. There is no treatment for this unless the eyes look infected at any point (redness, yellow/green discharge). I hope that things go well for Tomi moving forward. Best wishes and take care.

He is so cute! This can be a very normal thing is dogs like him. I wouldn’t be too worried unless he is ever favoring his eyes or if the discharge become thick and green or yellow. Poor guy. If the discharge is a yellow or green color and his sclera (white part of the eye) is red and irritated then he probably has an eye infection and is in need of topical antibiotics prescribed by your local veterinarian. This breed is also high risk for "Dry eye" (KCS-keratoconjunctivitis sicca) which will result in clear or white discharge initially, that can later turn to an infection. This condition is diagnosed with a simple tear production test through your vet and then Bear would need prescription medication (i.e. Cylclosporine) +/- artificial tears to treat this. If Bear has other symptoms (i.e. vomiting, decreased appetite, etc) and eye discharge, then this is probably a weepy eye that is secondary to another underlying condition. More information would be needed to know what other conditions may be the cause of his illness. So it is best to schedule an appointment for Bear so that you can get him properly diagnosed and treated for his current eye condition.
