Why does my energetic puppy keep waking up at 4 AM every day?

4 am is way too early kiba! I can imagine your frustration. Is kiba needing to go outside to go potty? If he is make sure you are letting him out as late as possible the night prior and make sure he goes potty at that time. If he is asking for his breakfast that early than you could try feeding him a small meal before bed so he s not hungry so early. If it's just that he wants you to get up and play etc then exercising him more the evening before will help him sleep longer. Long evening walks, a hard play session right before bed etc. you could also try kennel training overnight to see if he sleeps better. hope this helps a little!

There could be a few different things causing this. If he's a puppy, he may need to go to the bathroom -- take him out and but don't give him attention or play time. If he's an adult, it could be pain, habit, a medical issue causing him to need to get up to go to the bathroom, or accidentally reinforcing this behavior previously with play (or even by yelling at him - if he wants to interact he doesn't really care if you're happy or unhappy during the interaction). If he's elderly, he could be starting to have dementia (canine cognitive dysfunction) or any of the adult issues. So, if he's a puppy, I recommend the above, but if he's not a pup, I'd recommend starting with a vet visit and then ignoring him at night if nothing is wrong. Good luck!

So you hit on a few important topics. Firstly, Ziggy is young. I usually tell owners that a puppy can hold their urine 1 hour for every month until around 8-10 months old. In other words, Ziggy should probably only be able to hold it for about 5 hours at a time. This means he will need to go to the bathroom between 3-4am if he last gets let outside at 9pm. By 5am he probably REALLY has to go. You can try taking him outside a little later in the evening and see if that helps him hold it a little later in the morning. Secondly, it is likely that as the days get shorter Ziggy will be woken up a little later since the sun won't rise as early. I hope this helps!

Hello. A 2 year old un-neutered male dog will require LOTS of exercise to tire him out. You may just have to exercise him more. Also, neutering will decrease the amount of restless energy he has and is a good idea for other health concerns as well. Try taking him for longer walks, playing with the ball so he gets a lot of running in. Be careful not to perform any of these when it is very hot out, if it is more than 25-30 degrees do not run your dog.

Hello, and thank you for your question. A 1 year old dog should be able to sleep through the night without having to pee. If not, you can try using pee pads to train him to go potty in the house. If it is a matter of Rolo wanting more exercise, you can try longer walks, less frequently, e.g. 45-60 minute walks in the morning and night. I would gradually try to phase out the 4am walk by taking him out a bit later each day, e.g. 5am on day 1, then 6am on day 2, etc. He should eventually understand that he will not be getting that early morning walk, and as suggested earlier, if he has to go potty you can try training him to use a pee pad. Puppies don;t always sleep as well as adults. You may try crating her over night. You can give her heavy exercise just before bed. You cannot encourage the behavior by playing with her in the middle of the night or stimulating her. Most puppies will outgrow this. I hope this helps.
