Why does my 5-month-old puppy wake up at 5 AM for a potty break?

It's completely normal for Ziggy to still be having accidents in the house at this age - most puppies are not reliably housetrained until 8-12 months of age. For now, since he is still having accidents, I would recommend taking him out very frequently (every 20-30 minutes, unless he is sleeping) - praise and reward him with a treat as soon as he pees or poops outside. Inside, he needs to be supervised at all times to prevent accidents. When you aren't able to watch him, he should be in a crate or a puppy-proofed room where accidents will be easy to clean up. He will start letting you know when he needs to go out when he gets a little older - first, he needs to have a strong habit of going potty outside, which it sounds like isn't really established yet. For now, you need to be taking him out frequently even if he doesn't bark or give any other kind of signal - this will come with time.

Hello, and congratulations on your new puppy! I am assuming you have started potty training Max to go outdoors, not indoors on a pee pad? A puppy at 4 months should be able to hold his bladder about 4-5 hours overnight. This means that if you want him to go potty at 7am, you'll need to take him out for a pee around 2-3am. The good news is that over the next few months as he grows older, Max should be able to hold his bladder longer and longer, until he will be able to hold it for at least 8 hours overnight. This is really common for his age! Try to keep him up later if possible but just remember he is young and has a hard time holding it for too long. Also he has a lot of energy which will improve as he gets older. Finally if y'all have a doggy day care in your area you may try to take him there once or twice a week to see if it helps to expend more of his energy.

They cannot typically hold their urination and defecation through the night until after 3 months of age. So take him outside, let him go potty and place him directly back in his crate or sleeping area. Be quiet and do not engage in play with him. This will help him learn to go back to bed quickly. You've listed Grizzly as 2 months old, and this is still WAY too young to be holding it that young. Puppies do not have developed bladders that can hold their urine that long until they are about 8-9 months of age. The rule of thumb is one hour for every month old your pup is so Grizzly should be going out at a minimum of every two hours. Puppies generally also need to go potty about 15 minutes after waking up, playing, eating, or drinking, so you can use that to start timing his outings and make it a success. Since he is very young, he will also likely need to go out to go potty 1-2 times in the night, even if crate training. I do not recommend withholding water at all as this can lead to health issues.

Hello, and thank you for your question. A 1 year old dog should be able to sleep through the night without having to pee. If not, you can try using pee pads to train him to go potty in the house. If it is a matter of Rolo wanting more exercise, you can try longer walks, less frequently, e.g. 45-60 minute walks in the morning and night. I would gradually try to phase out the 4am walk by taking him out a bit later each day, e.g. 5am on day 1, then 6am on day 2, etc. He should eventually understand that he will not be getting that early morning walk, and as suggested earlier, if he has to go potty you can try training him to use a pee pad.
