My 1-year-old dog wakes at 4 AM for potty. How to make him sleep?

Hello, and congratulations on your new puppy! I am assuming you have started potty training Max to go outdoors, not indoors on a pee pad? A puppy at 4 months should be able to hold his bladder about 4-5 hours overnight. This means that if you want him to go potty at 7am, you'll need to take him out for a pee around 2-3am. The good news is that over the next few months as he grows older, Max should be able to hold his bladder longer and longer, until he will be able to hold it for at least 8 hours overnight. 4 am is way too early kiba! I can imagine your frustration. Is kiba needing to go outside to go potty? If he is make sure you are letting him out as late as possible the night prior and make sure he goes potty at that time. If he is asking for his breakfast that early than you could try feeding him a small meal before bed so he s not hungry so early. If it's just that he wants you to get up and play etc then exercising him more the evening before will help him sleep longer. Long evening walks, a hard play session right before bed etc. you could also try kennel training overnight to see if he sleeps better. hope this helps a little!

They cannot typically hold their urination and defecation through the night until after 3 months of age. So take him outside, let him go potty and place him directly back in his crate or sleeping area. Be quiet and do not engage in play with him. This will help him learn to go back to bed quickly. Some dogs have their own schedules and they are pretty stubborn about it! You could try going on a long walk 30 minutes after eating, sometimes that will stimulate the bowels. But otherwise, he probably just needs some more time to adjust. Make sure when you take him out in the middle of the night, that it is "boring" for Walter. Let him out, then take him back to bed. No talking or playing or treats.

So this makes it more likey that she will need to have a bowel movement overnight. I would also take her out frequently during the day so that she will have less of need to go out at night. So you hit on a few important topics. Firstly, Ziggy is young. I usually tell owners that a puppy can hold their urine 1 hour for every month until around 8-10 months old. In other words, Ziggy should probably only be able to hold it for about 5 hours at a time. This means he will need to go to the bathroom between 3-4am if he last gets let outside at 9pm. By 5am he probably REALLY has to go. You can try taking him outside a little later in the evening and see if that helps him hold it a little later in the morning. Secondly, it is likely that as the days get shorter Ziggy will be woken up a little later since the sun won't rise as early. I hope this helps!

There could be a few different things causing this. If he's a puppy, he may need to go to the bathroom -- take him out and but don't give him attention or play time. If he's an adult, it could be pain, habit, a medical issue causing him to need to get up to go to the bathroom, or accidentally reinforcing this behavior previously with play (or even by yelling at him - if he wants to interact he doesn't really care if you're happy or unhappy during the interaction). If he's elderly, he could be starting to have dementia (canine cognitive dysfunction) or any of the adult issues. So, if he's a puppy, I recommend the above, but if he's not a pup, I'd recommend starting with a vet visit and then ignoring him at night if nothing is wrong. Good luck!
