My new puppy has red eyes and is panting a lot. Is he okay?

From the photo it appears your dog has a conformation abnormality of the lower eyelid called ectropion which makes the kid sag down/look droopy. I believe you are seeing the dogs third eyelid being exposed and also irritated due to this. In some cases we need to prescribe medication to help the area be less irritated and sometimes surgery is used to correct the area. This is less concerning than non stop panting, which could be a sign of lung disease (or severe anxiety). I would recommend a vet exam ASAP due to the panting and they can look at the eyes at this time as well.

It sounds like the new puppy is probably very exciting and very stressful for Penguin as very heavy panting is usually a sign of stress in dogs. I would continue to do short, monitored meetings to let the two get to know each other in a safe environment, and then give Penguin plenty of alone time to relax and get some personal attention. If he gets too excited during the meeting, taking a break, letting everyone calm down, and then trying again later is best. As the two get used to each other more and more, you can extend their time together under supervision.

I tend to see puppies with droopy eyes occasionally get red conjunctival tissues especially when tired. And sometimes after excitement. If he develops squinting or abnormal eye discharge then I recommend your Vet examining the eyes. I wish you the best!

I would not say that him having red eyes is ever normal. However if he is really hyper and has been barking at the vet/ pulling on his leash at home he might have red eyes. However if he is having a mild allergy or has a mild upper respiratory infection I would be more concerned. I would recommend taking him back to the vet so they can check them out well and help determine the cause. Also, i bet the vet would like to know that sam eyes are not normal since he left

Hello, sorry to hear about Pax. It could be that he is having normal eye secretions that are becoming stuck on his fur. As long as he is not itching at his eyes, having profuse persistent discharge, squinting, or having a red eye then I would continue to monitor him. You can use a damp cotton ball to wipe the fur around his eye and keep it clean. If the discharge worsens, or if he develops any sneezing or nasal discharge then you should have him evaluated by a veterinarian as this may indicate an upper respiratory infection. He is so cute! This can be a very normal thing is dogs like him. I wouldn’t be too worried unless he is ever favoring his eyes or if the discharge become thick and green or yellow. Good morning! I see that you posted this last night, and hopefully Theodore is back to normal this morning! Puppies do seem to breathe faster than adult dogs, but if his breathing is abnormal for him (which it seemed to be last night), it is always a good idea to have him checked out by a vet. There are a few conditions that can suddenly affect a pups breathing, such as an allergic condition, or a disease called Non Cardiogenic Pulmonary Edema. If he is back to normal this am, no worries. If he is still breathing poorly, I would suggest you take him in the am! Best fo luck with Theodore!
