My puppy has parvo, eating but loose stool. What are his chances?

I'm sorry Gizmo has parvo! It is a good sign that he's eating, and hopefully he can start on puppy food again soon. Without seeing him in person, I can't say what his chances of survival are, but I can say things are looking good if he's eating and keeping it down. I'm sorry to hear that Cooper has parvo! You did the right thing by taking him to the vet as soon as you noticed a problem. I'm glad he's currently hospitalized for treatment. Parvo is a serious illness and there are no guarantees... but in general, older puppies like Cooper tend to fare better than younger pups. It can take 1-2 weeks to recover from parvo, and it is probably encouraging that Frank is not worse at this point. Even when you are careful about potential exposure and when you follow the recommended vaccine protocol sometimes puppies will still become infected with the virus. While I can’t say the exact odds without knowing more details about his lab values and physical exam, some studies have shown a 90% success rate with inpatient treatment in a hospital and the longer he goes without developing life threatening complications the better his prognosis is.

Bloody diarrhea does happen with parvovirus infections as the virus destroys the healthy protective lining of the intestines and that causes blood to come inside the intestinal track. Protein loss and anemia can occur because of this which can cause a domino effect of problems with dogs battling Parvovirus. It is difficult to predict what the prognosis will be with Awesome, sight unseen. However, I can tell you prognosis does depend on whether the infection was diagnosed early or not, how old the dog was at the time of diagnosis, and level of treatment. Older puppies that have been diagnosed early and undergoing aggressive treatment have a much better prognosis. I hope this has helped and I wish Awesome a speedy recovery!

I’m so sorry to hear about Ganja! Parvo is a terrible disease. The good news is that if sounds like you and Ganja are pretty lucky. The at-home treatment has an estimated 80-85% survival rate anyways, and based on how you’re describing Ganja, I’m guessing she has an even better chance than that. Usually dogs start going “downhill” about day 2- 3, starts improving by day 4-5, and is basically out of the woods and almost 100% by day 7. The fact that she is eating and playing is an EXCELLENT sign. The other thing going for Ganja is her older age and bigger size. These guys tend to do better than the tiny young puppies. Keep giving the anti nausea medications and antibiotics as prescribed because keeping her eating and drinking is the best thing you can do. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Ganja!

These are very positive signs! When a dog survives the first four days of parvo, they have a very good chance of recovery. It may be a few weeks before Sammy is back to himself, but I think based on what you are telling us, those are good signs.

Hydration is key, as dehydration can set in quickly from the severe diarrhea. Antibiotic therapy and any vomiting medications also help. Providing adequate nutrition is important as well as malnourishment can make recovery more difficult. There was a study published by Colorado State University on parvo treatment at home that showed at home treatments were quite effective. I would ensure that you have spoken to your vet about all of the home treatment options so that you can get him on the road to recovery sooner rather than later.
