My dog has parvo and is improving. What are his chances of recovery?

My dog is having parvovirus ,he was not able to stand up nor able to open eyes, but now after giving IV fluids he started walking .will he recover?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I am sorry to hear that Brutus has Parvo virus.this can be quite a difficult infection to fight off for most puppies but it is possible to recover from parvo virus. Hydration is key, as dehydration can set in quickly from the severe diarrhea. Antibiotic therapy and any vomiting medications also help. Providing adequate nutrition is important as well as malnourishment can make recovery more difficult. There was a study published by Colorado State University on parvo treatment at home that showed at home treatments were quite effective. I would ensure that you have spoken to your vet about all of the home treatment options so that you can get him on the road to recovery sooner rather than later. Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Kizer. Oh no, that's not good. He needs to see a vet immediately, as parvo is very deadly. To have the best chance of survival, your dog does need to be hospitalized. Parvovirus treatment consists of aggressive supportive care to control the symptoms and boost your dog’s immune system to help him win the battle against this dangerous disease. Dogs infected with parvovirus need intensive treatment in a veterinary hospital, where they receive antibiotics, drugs to control the vomiting, intravenous fluids, and other supportive therapies. Please take him into a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Parvovirus is a severe infection with life threatening complications.

Ideally, depending on the severity of parvovirus infection, treatment in hospital should be performed, but, if clinically stable, it is not wrong to have him back home as stress can play an important role in the clinical course of the disease.
Actually it could be even beneficial.

If he has parvovirus or other infectious diseases such as distemper then this could perhaps carry a poor prognosis for him. He should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to determine the cause of his diarrhea and weakness. He may need to be hospitalize to receive fluids and medications through his veins. A dog's chances of survival with [parvovirus](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/parvovirus/) are entirely dependent on the pets will to thrive and genetics. But yes, you do increase survival with quick veterinary action and appropriate treatment. The parvo vaccine at this time is not recommended because you suspect she may already be infected with parvovirus. The same applies to people, if a person has the flu already it is not advised to give them the flu vaccine. She will most likely not be okay with just hydration because parvovirus requires a multiple treatment for the best chance at survival. It is best to take her to your vet for proper medical treatment for parvovirus, which can be treated at home with medication given to you by the vet if you cannot hospitalize her (which is the optimal treatment). I have been successful in saving parvo infected pets with having the owner return daily for injectable antibiotics, anti-nausea medications, subcutaneous fluids and Vitamin B injections. My dog has parvovirus. What can I do to help beyond vet care?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Parvovirus is a severe gastroenteritis that affect puppies more often. This is a viral infection so there is no direct treatment for the virus so the treatment per se is directed at treating secondary bacterial infections and mostly helping with the clinical symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence. This warrants ideally hospitalization with some cases being able to be managed with outpatient care depending on its severity. I recommend that you continue to follow up with a veterinarian who can institute therapy for Cleo as soon as possible. The quicker this condition gets treated the better the outcome tends to be. I'm sorry to hear that Cooper has parvo! You did the right thing by taking him to the vet as soon as you noticed a problem. I'm glad he's currently hospitalized for treatment. Parvo is a serious illness and there are no guarantees... but in general, older puppies like Cooper tend to fare better than younger pups. Since you were able to get him started on treatment right away, he has a fairly good chance of surviving. I hope he's able to pull through. <3

Hi and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear Awesome has Parvovirus. Bloody diarrhea does happen with parvovirus infections as the virus destroys the healthy protective lining of the intestines and that causes blood to come inside the intestinal track. Protein loss and anemia can occur because of this which can cause a domino effect of problems with dogs battling Parvovirus. It is difficult to predict what the prognosis will be with Awesome, sight unseen. However, I can tell you prognosis does depend on whether the infection was diagnosed early or not, how old the dog was at the time of diagnosis, and level of treatment. Older puppies that have been diagnosed early and undergoing aggressive treatment have a much better prognosis. I hope this has helped and I wish Awesome a speedy recovery!

It sounds like he is doing very well soo far. His chances of survival are good/favorable. If he is eating and no vomiting, then he can likely come home now to continue his treatment with you as he continues to recover from parvo.
